Chapter 5 - The Confession in the Vault

Inside the soundproof concrete vault beneath the Southside shipping docks, the damp air reeked of diesel fuel, rust, and raw terror. Genevieve Cross sat bound to a heavy iron chair beneath the searing white glare of an industrial halogen floodlight.

Her designer ruby gown was torn at the hem, her golden hair disheveled, and her diamond jewelry stripped from her wrists and throat. She glared at the shadows of the doorway with manic defiance, trying desperately to maintain her high-society arrogance.

The heavy steel door groaned on its hinges, and Dominic stepped into the light, dressed in black tactical gear with a silenced pistol holstered at his side. He dragged a metal chair across the concrete, sitting down three feet in front of her without uttering a single word.

He set the crystal vitamin jar and the toxicological report onto the small table between them. Genevieve looked at the documents, her lips curling into a venomous, defiant sneer.

“You think you can scare me with medical papers, Dominic?” Genevieve hissed, leaning forward against the nylon restraints. “My father died taking a bullet meant for your father; you are bound by blood to protect me, no matter what lies Clara whispers in your ear!”

Dominic leaned in, his dark eyes colder than the bottom of Lake Michigan. “Clara didn't whisper a word, Genevieve; she packed her bags and left me alone with your poison.”

“She was a weak, pathetic little nobody from a bankrupt family!” Genevieve screamed, her voice cracking in hysterical rage. “She didn't belong in our world! You were supposed to marry me, combine our family fortunes, and rule this entire city together!”

“You poisoned my child for four months,” Dominic said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of all human emotion. “You sat in my living room, drank my wine, and handed my wife a chemical designed to rip our baby from her womb.”

Genevieve began to laugh, a wild, unhinged cackle that echoed off the damp concrete walls. “Your child? That baby would have tied you to that boring little mouse forever! I did you a favor, Dominic; I was cleaning your house so you could finally see who truly belongs on the throne beside you!”

Dominic pulled a thick leather-bound folder from his jacket and dropped it into her lap. “Let’s talk about your father’s heroic sacrifice seven years ago, Genevieve.”

Genevieve’s laughter died instantly, her eyes widening in sheer panic as she recognized the German banking seals stamped across the first page. The folder contained wire transfers of fifteen million dollars sent from her father’s personal account to an Albanian assassination cartel forty-eight hours before the ambush.

“Your father didn't take a bullet to save my father,” Dominic whispered, each word landing like a sledgehammer. “Your father hired the hit squad to slaughter my family, and my father put a bullet through his skull the second he realized the betrayal.”

Genevieve began to hyperventilate, the color completely draining from her face as the foundational lie of her entire life was stripped away. “No… no, you weren't supposed to find those records… Julian swore the Swiss servers were scrubbed!”

Dominic stood up, looming over her like an angel of death. “Clara spent six months recovering those files while you were busy trying to poison our child; and now, the blood debt is officially paid in full.”
