Chapter 12 - The Grand Jury Strike

Three days later, the grand ceremonial courtroom of the Dirksen Federal Building in downtown Chicago was packed to maximum capacity. Over three hundred federal prosecutors, international journalists, and civic leaders watched in breathless silence as the largest criminal syndicate trial in state history convened.
Sitting at the defense table in bright orange prison jumpsuits were Julian Laurent and the surviving elders of the corrupt syndicate council. Their wrists and ankles were bound in heavy iron chains, their faces pale and defeated under the harsh fluorescent glare of the courtroom.
The double doors at the rear of the courtroom swung open, and the entire gallery stood up as Dominic Vance entered the room. He wore a simple, clean charcoal suit, his hair neatly trimmed, his visible scars bearing witness to the battle he had fought in the mountains.
He walked down the center aisle with steady, humble steps, ignoring the flashing cameras of the international press corps. He did not sit with the defendants at the defense table; he walked directly to the prosecution witness stand, raising his right hand to take the sacred oath.
“Mr. Vance, do you swear that the testimony you are about to give before this grand jury is the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?” the court clerk asked in a booming, resonant voice.
“I do,” Dominic replied, his voice calm, clear, and steady as an anchor in a storm.
For the next four hours, Dominic systematically dismantled forty years of organized crime, corporate extortion, and political corruption. He provided the uncorrupted cryptographic keys to fifty-two offshore laundering networks, named every corrupt judge on Genevieve’s payroll, and submitted the forensic toxicological evidence of the attempted assassination of his wife.
Julian Laurent shouted obscenities from the defense table, attempting to lunge across the railing until federal marshals pinned him to the floor. “He’s lying! He’s giving away our entire world to save his own skin!”
The presiding federal judge slammed his wooden gavel onto the bench with thunderous force. “Julian Laurent, you will remain silent or be removed from this courtroom in restraints!”
Dominic looked across the gallery, his eyes finding Clara, who sat quietly in the second row of the public gallery beside Arthur Vance. She wore an elegant ivory dress, looking radiant, strong, and completely untouchable as she watched the man she loved reclaim his honor through truth.

“I have no further evidence to present, Your Honor,” Dominic concluded, looking up at the judge with complete serenity. “I submit myself entirely to the judgment of the court.”
The courtroom erupted into a standing ovation from the journalists and spectators as Dominic stepped down from the stand. He had not sought a backdoor deal or an easy escape; he had stood in the light of day and destroyed the darkness with his own hands.
