Chapter 11 - The Kneeling Kingpin

Dominic took the stairs three at a time, his boots leaving bloody smudges across the cedar steps. He reached the reinforced steel door of the second-floor safe room, stopping in his tracks and dropping his weapons onto the floor to show he was completely unarmed.
He leaned his forehead against the cold metal plate, knocking gently with his bare, bloodied knuckles. “Clara… it’s me… it’s Dominic,” he breathed through the intercom grill, his voice cracking with unbearable emotion. “The mercenaries are eliminated, the perimeter is secure, and Arthur is going to be fine.”
The heavy electromagnetic locks disengaged with four synchronized, echoing metallic thuds that resonated through the quiet hallway. The heavy steel door slowly swung open, revealing Clara standing in the warm amber light, holding her compact firearm lowered at her side.
She looked at the man standing before her—the feared, untouchable syndicate lord of Chicago, now drenched in rain, covered in mud and blood, his clothes shredded and his face bruised. For the first time in the seven years she had known him, Dominic Vance was completely stripped of his arrogance, his power, and his pride.
Dominic did not step across the threshold into her room; instead, he slowly lowered himself onto both knees on the wooden floorboards. He bowed his head until his forehead almost touched the toes of her boots, his massive shoulders shaking with violent, silent sobs.
“I don't expect you to forgive me, Clara,” Dominic wept, his tears dripping onto the cedar floor. “I don't expect you to ever come back to Chicago, and I don't ask to be your husband again.”
Clara looked down at the broken man kneeling at her feet, her heart tightening with an overwhelming mixture of sorrow and profound relief. She saw the genuine, unadulterated remorse burning in his soul—he had not come to demand her return; he had jumped through a storm to die for her safety.
“Dominic,” she spoke softly, her gentle voice washing over his bowed head like healing rain. “Look at me.”
Dominic lifted his head slowly, his bloodshot eyes meeting her calm, radiant gaze. “I gave the entire empire to your independent trust in Geneva, Clara; every company, every ship, and every dollar is in your name so no one can ever use it to hurt you again.”
“And what about you, Dominic?” Clara asked, her voice trembling slightly. “What is left for you?”
“I have nothing left, Clara… and I have never felt more free,” Dominic confessed, pulling the small black-and-white ultrasound scan from his inner pocket and placing it gently at her feet. “In twenty-four hours, I am turning myself in to the federal court to face my charges; I just needed to see you one last time to tell you that you were right.”

Clara stepped forward, kneeling down on the floor in front of him and gently placing her warm, clean hands on his bruised cheeks. “A man who can tear down his own throne to protect his family is no longer a monster, Dominic.”
She took his bloodstained hand and pressed it gently against her stomach, where the tiny, unmistakable flutter of life pulsed beneath her sweater. Dominic closed his eyes, fresh tears streaming down his face as he felt his child’s heartbeat for the very first time.
