Chapter 14 - The Nursery on the Bluff

Six months later, the golden summer sun bathed the rolling green bluffs of the Olympic Peninsula in breathtaking warmth. The cedar estate had been completely restored, the scars of the winter battle replaced by blooming flowerbeds, climbing roses, and the sweet scent of fresh ocean air.

On the second floor, the nursery was filled with soft afternoon sunlight streaming through the open skylight. In the center of the room stood a handcrafted oak crib that Dominic had carved with his own hands from fallen cedar logs on the property.

Resting peacefully inside the soft cashmere blankets was four-week-old Leo Arthur Vance, sleeping soundly with his tiny fists curled beside his rosy cheeks. Dominic stood beside the crib, wearing a simple flannel shirt with his sleeves rolled up, his scarred hands resting with breathtaking gentleness on the wooden rail.

He watched the baby’s rhythmic, tiny breaths with an expression of pure, reverent awe that belonged to a man who had witnessed a miracle. He reached down with his pinky finger, and little Leo instinctively wrapped his tiny, warm hand around his father’s finger.

Clara walked into the nursery wearing a white linen sundress, holding two steaming mugs of herbal tea. She set the cups on the dresser and walked over to Dominic, wrapping her arm gently around his waist and resting her head against his broad chest.

“He looks just like you when you’re thinking hard,” Clara whispered, smiling as the baby twitched his tiny nose in his sleep.

Dominic pulled Clara closer against his side, kissing the top of her dark hair with profound, endless tenderness. “He has your peaceful spirit, Clara… and thank God he has your heart.”

Down in the coastal garden below the window, Arthur Vance was teaching Nolan how to prune the heirloom apple trees, their hearty laughter drifting up through the warm breeze. The private guards were gone, the security checkpoints were dismantled, and the constant fear of betrayal had dissolved into the quiet rustle of the pines.

The Vance Global Foundation in Geneva was thriving under Clara’s independent direction, providing hundreds of millions of dollars to fund pediatric hospitals, clean energy initiatives, and orphanages across three continents. The stolen wealth of the underworld had been permanently converted into a fountain of hope and healing for thousands of innocent lives.

Dominic reached into his shirt pocket and pulled out the small, worn black-and-white sonogram printout he had carried every single day since that fateful night in the Chicago dining room. He gently placed the faded photograph inside the family baby album on the side table, closing the leather cover with a soft, final click.

The past was finally at rest, its terrible debts paid in full by the truth. Dominic turned to his wife, looking into her radiant blue eyes with a devotion that would never waver for a single breath of his life.
