Chapter 4 - The Fortress in the Pines

Two thousand miles to the northwest, rain lashed against the towering cedar trees bordering the rugged coastline of the Olympic Peninsula. The isolated timber-and-stone estate perched over the churning Pacific Ocean stood cloaked in dense, impenetrable coastal fog.

Clara sat by the stone fireplace in the grand living room, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, holding a warm cup of peppermint tea. Her duffle bag lay unpacked on the rustic table beside an encrypted satellite laptop displaying real-time financial markets.

The heavy front door opened, and a tall, weathered man with silver hair and sharp, intelligent grey eyes walked into the room. It was Arthur Vance, Dominic’s sixty-five-year-old uncle who had faked his own retirement and vanished from the syndicate five years prior.

“The Chicago network is in complete chaos,” Arthur said, hanging his damp oilskin coat on the wooden peg near the door. “Dominic has deployed eighty armed operatives across the city and placed a twenty-million-dollar bounty for any information on your extraction route.”

Clara took a slow sip of her tea, her expression serene and untouched by the storm raging across the country. “Dominic is looking for an enemy he can shoot with a gun; he doesn't know how to fight an enemy who simply walks away.”

Arthur pulled a chair up to the hearth, warming his calloused hands near the crackling logs. “He raided the Cross estate in Highland Park two hours ago and dragged Genevieve to the subterranean holding cells at the docks.”

Clara didn't flinch, though a faint flicker of sorrow crossed her delicate features. “Dominic always acts after the damage is already done; he spends his entire life putting out fires that he allowed other people to start.”

“He found the poisoned vitamins, Clara,” Arthur revealed quietly, watching her face in the firelight. “Doctor Harrison confirmed the progestin blocker; Dominic knows Genevieve was attempting to murder his heir.”

Clara gently rested her palm against her abdomen, feeling the quiet, rhythmic pulse of life beneath her sweater. “I knew about the poison four weeks ago, Arthur; that was why I had our private lab in Zurich duplicate the capsules with harmless sugar placebos.”

Arthur stared at his niece-in-law with boundless admiration and shock. “You knew she was poisoning you, and you didn't say a word to Dominic?”

“If I had told Dominic four weeks ago, he would have made excuses for her,” Clara answered with chilling clarity. “He would have blamed her grief, blamed her trauma, or blamed the sacred blood debt he thought he owed her dead father.”

She opened her encrypted laptop, turning the screen toward the veteran syndicate elder. “I needed Dominic to see Genevieve’s true face with his own eyes, without my interference.”

Projected across the screen were the unredacted historical banking records from the Bank of International Settlements in Geneva. The documents proved that seven years ago, Genevieve’s father had not died saving Dominic’s father—he had been the traitor who hired the hitmen to execute the entire Vance bloodline.
