Chapter 2 - The Erased Ghost

The thunder shook the concrete foundations of the penthouse as dawn broke over the city in a cold, slate-grey haze. Dominic sat at his mahogany desk, surrounded by twelve of his most trusted syndicate captains who stood in petrified silence.

His bespoke blazer was discarded on the floor, his shirt sleeves rolled up, and his bloodshot eyes burned with dangerous, erratic fury. On the polished desk before him lay six encrypted satellite phones and a digital tracking monitor flashing with bright red error codes.

“What do you mean her biometric signature is gone?” Dominic’s voice was barely a whisper, yet it carried the terrifying force of a cocked pistol. “She has an encrypted security clearance that links directly to our sovereign mainframe.”

His chief technology officer swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he tapped the keys of his portable terminal. “Mrs. Vance was the architect who designed our encrypted data architecture three years ago, Boss.”

“She wrote the master algorithms that protect our offshore bank accounts and private logistics routes,” the technician stammered in dread.

“She didn't just log out; she permanently purged her facial recognition profile, cancelled her passport proxies, and wiped her vehicle transponders.”

Dominic crushed a heavy crystal paperweight in his bare fist, the sharp edges cutting deep into his palm without him noticing the pain. Clara had not run away like a frightened, helpless victim; she had executed a flawless tactical extraction with the precision of a master strategist.

He turned his murderous gaze toward Marcus, his senior lieutenant who had been assigned to oversee Genevieve’s security detail for the past two years.

“Who authorized the emergency dispatch alert from Genevieve’s compound last night?”

Marcus looked down at the floor, beads of cold sweat dripping from his chin onto his polished shoes.

“Miss Cross used her father’s priority override code, Boss.”

“The override code reserved exclusively for active syndicate assassinations,” Dominic hissed, stepping around the desk until his chest pressed against the lieutenant.

“And you didn't verify the breach before pinging my private encrypted frequency during my dinner?”

“She told us she had a fatal heart complication and that intruders were cutting her perimeter fence,” Marcus pleaded in a raspy, terrified voice.

“She threatened to have the syndicate council strip our ranks if we didn't summon you immediately.”

Dominic grabbed Marcus by the throat, lifting the grown man off the floor and slamming him against the glass wall. “My wife was sitting across from me carrying my child, and you let a socialite play games with my family’s life.”

He released the lieutenant, watching him collapse onto the carpet, coughing violently and clutching his bruised neck. “Freeze every credit line, private bank account, and luxury trust associated with the Cross family name.”

“Boss, the syndicate council will view that as a violation of the sacred blood pact,” Marcus wheezed from the floor. “Her father saved your father’s life seven years ago.”

“I don't care about the council, and I don't care about the blood pact,” Dominic snarled, checking the chamber of his sidearm. “If Genevieve Cross had anything to do with my wife’s disappearance, I will burn her entire bloodline to the ground.”
