Chapter 7 - The Mistress Flips

Within forty-eight hours of her detention at the Northern Neck Regional Jail, Brenda Larson broke completely under federal interrogation.

Facing up to thirty years in federal prison with consecutive mandatory minimums for aggravated identity theft, she signed a comprehensive cooperation agreement.

Inside Interrogation Room B, Brenda sat across from Marcus and Agent Miller, spilling every detail of Gavin’s multi-year criminal enterprise.

"Gavin was drowning in debt from high-stakes underground sports betting in Atlantic City," Brenda wept, wiping mascara from her cheeks with a rough paper towel.

"He owed over six hundred thousand dollars to loan sharks connected to an illegal gambling ring in Philadelphia."

"When Clara had her stroke, Gavin called it an 'act of God' that would solve all his liquidity problems."

"He stole Clara’s safe deposit box keys while she was in the ambulance."

"He looted her original stock certificates, her antique jewelry collection, and the original deed to the house."

"Where is the four hundred and fifty thousand dollars from the hard-money loan, Brenda?" Marcus pressed, his voice unyielding.

"He moved three hundred thousand through a crypto mixing service into a cold storage wallet," Brenda confessed, pointing to an encrypted flash drive in an evidence bag.

"The rest of the cash is stashed in a climate-controlled self-storage unit out on Midlothian Turnpike."

"Unit 402, registered under his high school buddy's name."

"He has a fake Canadian passport and a one-way private charter booked out of Richmond Executive Airport for tomorrow morning."

"He knew the feds were closing in."

"He was planning to leave me to take the fall while he disappeared to Costa Rica."

Marcus leaned back in his steel chair, his jaw set like concrete.

"Thank you, Brenda."

"You just booked Gavin a one-way ticket to a federal supermax facility."
