Chapter 1 - The Shadow Overpass

The freezing rain beat against the windshield of our SUV like a volley of lead pellets.

Marcus kept the engine idling, blasting the heater at maximum capacity while I wrapped three thermal wool blankets around Mom’s shivering shoulders.

Her lips were still a faint shade of bruised violet from two days exposed to the damp Virginia elements.

Under the dim amber glow of the vehicle’s interior light, her fragile hands trembled as she clutched a paper cup of warm chicken broth.

Every breath she drew rattled in her chest, a painful reminder of how close her fragile lungs were to collapsing after seven weeks of neglected recovery.

Marcus turned in the driver’s seat, his steel-gray eyes studying the waterlogged documents we had recovered from Mom's plastic grocery sack.

His thumb brushed across the purple notary stamp stamped onto the bottom of the deed conveyance.

"Brenda Larson," Marcus murmured, his voice dropping into the quiet, terrifying register he used when dissecting high-level criminal syndicates.

"Commission registered in Henrico County, stamp expiration November 2027."

"Look at the execution date, Maya."

I leaned forward, squinting through the condensation on the passenger glass.

The black ink clearly read: October 14th, 2:15 PM.

My blood turned to pure ice water in my veins.

"On October 14th, Mom was in the neurological ICU at VCU Health," I whispered, my voice trembling with mounting fury.

"She had a breathing tube down her throat and three intracranial pressure monitors drilled into her skull."

"She wasn't signing a warranty deed in front of an escrow clerk."

"She was in a medically induced coma fighting for her life."

Marcus flipped open his private encrypted satellite phone, dialing a direct extension that bypassed civilian dispatch lines.

The line connected on the second ring with a low electronic chime.

"This is Special Agent Marcus Stone, badge ID 9441-Charlie," Marcus spoke into the microphone, his tone sharp and commanding.

"Patch me directly to Assistant Special Agent in Charge Miller at the Richmond Field Office."

"Authorization code: Redline Grand Jury Asset Forfeiture."

A gravelly voice answered from the other end of the encrypted channel within three seconds.

"Marcus? We haven't heard that call sign since the cartel laundering trials in Miami."

"What do you have?"

"An aggravated grand larceny and elder exploitation case involving falsified deeds, wire fraud, and forged government seals," Marcus replied, staring through the rain at the distant city skyline.

"The perpetrator is Gavin Vance, managing partner of Apex Horizon Holdings."

"Flag his passport, freeze his domestic LLC accounts under Title 18, and assemble a tactical paper-trail team."

"We are bringing the victim in right now."
