Chapter 2 - The Safehouse Briefing

We arrived at Marcus’s private cabin retreat in the wooded hills of Hanover County just before midnight.

The property was ringed with high-definition infrared security cameras and reinforced steel-core doorframes, a legacy of his years investigating international cartels.

Marcus carried Mom inside like she weighed no more than a child, settling her onto the plush velvet sofa before a roaring hearth.

Dr.

Elena Ward, a trusted former military trauma physician and close family friend, was already waiting with an IV drip and a portable diagnostic kit.

"Severe hypothermia, acute dehydration, and advanced stage-two bedsores from neglect," Dr.

Ward stated bluntly, adjusting the saline line taped to Mom’s frail wrist.

"If she had spent another twelve hours under that bridge in this freezing sleet, she would have slipped into a fatal cardiac arrhythmia."

Mom looked up through tears that carved pale tracks down her soot-stained cheeks.

"Gavin came to the rehab center with two men in dark suits while you were out of town on business, Maya," Mom rasped, her voice breaking on every syllable.

"They told me the hospital was going to seize my house for unpaid surgical bills."

"They held my hand, pressed my thumb into a purple ink pad, and told me I was signing an insurance protection voucher."

"Two days later, Gavin’s girlfriend packed my clothes into trash bags and drove me to a bus station shelter."

"When the shelter was full, they locked the gates and left me on the street."

I buried my face in my hands, hot tears of shame and rage burning my eyes.

My own brother had treated the woman who gave him life like discarded garbage to fund his lavish lifestyle.

Marcus stood behind the kitchen island, his laptop screen illuminating his stern jaw with a cold blue glare.

He was already deep into the Virginia land records database, pulling up the digital title trail for Mom’s property.

"Here it is," Marcus announced, turning the monitor toward me.

"The $550,000 property on Willow Creek Lane wasn't sold to a legitimate family."

"It was deeded for ten dollars to a shell company named Apex Horizon Real Estate LLC."

"Three days later, Apex Horizon took out a $450,000 cash-out hard-money bridge loan against the property's clean title."

"The funds were wired directly into an offshore corporate account in Belize."

"And the sole managing officer registered to Apex Horizon is Brenda Larson—Gavin’s live-in business partner."
