Chapter 13 - The Day of Reckoning

Six months later, Courtroom 702 of the United States District Court was packed to capacity for the sentencing of Gavin Vance and Brenda Larson.

Mom sat in the front row of the gallery between Marcus and me, dressed in an elegant navy wool coat, her posture dignified, her health fully restored.

At the defense table, Gavin stood before Chief District Judge Evelyn Brooks, flanked by two federal marshals.

He kept his head bowed, unable to turn around and meet the eyes of the dozens of elderly victims and their families seated behind him.

Federal Prosecutor Catherine Vance stepped to the podium, delivering a blistering sentencing memorandum.

"Your Honor, the defendant orchestrated a calculated, predatory campaign of financial terror against the most vulnerable members of our community," the prosecutor stated.

"He exploited catastrophic illnesses, forged judicial and state seals, and showed zero mercy when discarding his own biological mother onto the freezing streets."

"The United States requests the maximum statutory penalty under federal sentencing guidelines."

Judge Brooks adjusted her spectacles and looked down at Gavin with stern, unyielding gravity.

"Gavin Vance, your conduct represents the absolute nadir of human selfishness and moral bankruptcy," Judge Brooks declared, her voice resounding through the vaulted courtroom.

"You weaponized the law, forged state instruments, and robbed innocent retirees of their life savings to fund your hedonistic lifestyle."

"On the counts of aggravated identity theft, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit interstate transport of stolen property, and federal money laundering, this court sentences you to twenty-four years in the United States Penitentiary, with zero eligibility for federal parole."

"Furthermore, an order of mandatory restitution in the amount of four point two million dollars is hereby entered against all your liquidated assets."

BANG!

The heavy wooden gavel struck the sounding block with the finality of a closing tomb.

Gavin broke down in hysterical sobs as the marshals clamped heavy iron chains around his waist and ankles, dragging him through the side prisoner holding door.
