Chapter 6 - The Coma Log

The following morning at the Richmond Federal Courthouse, Marcus laid out the medical forensics before Federal Magistrate Judge Evelyn Brooks.
Dr.
Robert Henderson, Chief of Neurological Surgery at VCU Health, took the witness stand under oath, projecting Clara’s electronic health records onto the court monitors.
"On October 14th, the patient Clara Vance was in critical status following a massive hemorrhagic stroke," Dr.
Henderson testified with absolute clinical certainty.
"She had received forty milligrams of intravenous propofol every hour to maintain brain rest."
"Her extremities were completely flaccid, and she was incapable of holding a pen, speaking, or understanding human speech."
"Furthermore, hospital surveillance logs show that at 2:15 PM on October 14th, the defendant Brenda Larson was never admitted to the intensive care floor."
"The only visitors logged during that window were medical personnel and the patient’s daughter, Maya Vance."
Gavin sat at the defense table in a wrinkled dress shirt, his hands shaking as his high-priced private attorney flipped through the medical charts with mounting dread.
Every single page of medical evidence was a nail in the coffin of their fraudulent conveyance scheme.
Marcus took the stand next, presenting the digital forensic analysis of the deed transfer.
"Your Honor, we examined the metadata of the PDF deed submitted to the county land records portal," Marcus testified calmly.
"The document was created on a laptop belonging to Gavin Vance at 11:42 PM on October 18th—four days after the alleged signing."
"The notary seal was digitally pasted from a scanned image file stored on Gavin’s cloud server."
"The forged signature was generated using a vector tracing tool that duplicated Clara Vance’s signature from an old 2018 Christmas greeting card."
Judge Brooks lowered her reading glasses, her expression burning with unadulterated judicial outrage.
"In my thirty years on the federal bench, I have rarely witnessed an act of elder financial abuse so utterly devoid of human decency," Judge Brooks stated.
"The court finds probable cause to believe that the defendants engaged in aggravated identity theft, wire fraud, and interstate transport of stolen property."
"Bail for Gavin Vance is set at two million dollars cash, with immediate surrender of all travel documents."

"Brenda Larson is remanded to federal custody without bond."
Gavin slumped in his chair, his face drained of all color as the reality of a twenty-year federal indictment settled over his shoulders like an iron shroud.
