Chapter 9 - The Truth Behind the Crash

Following the conclusion of the board meeting, I retreated to my private executive office on the sixty-fifth floor. Charles entered carrying a sealed archival folder from the National Transportation Safety Board dating back ten years.
“Ms. Sterling, our forensic cyber-investigators finally cracked the encrypted black-box data from your father’s fatal private jet crash over Lake Michigan,” Charles said solemnly, placing the files on my glass desk. “The engine failure was not caused by icing or pilot error as the original investigation concluded.”
I opened the dossier, my hands steadying as I reviewed the decrypted telemetry logs and maintenance manifests. Attached to the fuel system schematics was a high-resolution photograph of a tampered fuel-flow regulator valve bearing a forged serial stamp.
“The maintenance firm that serviced your father’s jet forty-eight hours before the crash was owned by Thomas Cross—Julian’s biological father,” Charles explained with deep sorrow. “And the two-million-dollar payment to execute the sabotage originated from Eleanor Vance’s private offshore account in Zurich.”
A single tear tracked down my cheek, not from weakness, but from the overwhelming realization of the long, painful journey that had led me to this moment. My father, Marcus Sterling, had built an empire of honor and generosity, only to be murdered by the very parasites he had sheltered under his roof.
“My father knew they were trying to steal his shipping lines,” I whispered, touching his engraved signature on the old corporate charter. “He transferred the entire nine-billion-dollar sovereign trust into my name before he boarded that plane, knowing I would return to finish the war.”
“You spent four years playing the humble seamstress in their home, enduring their insults and gathering every piece of evidence,” Charles said, looking at me with immense reverence. “Your father would be prouder of you today than on any day in his life, Victoria.”
I stood up, walking over to the panoramic window looking out over the sprawling city of Chicago. “They thought they killed the Sterling bloodline when they brought down my father’s plane, Charles.”

I turned around, looking at the bassinet resting near my desk where Alexander and Gabriel slept peacefully in the warm afternoon light. “They didn't know that my father’s spirit lives on in my sons, and we will never let the darkness touch this name again.”
Charles bowed his head with deep respect. “The federal grand jury has officially convened downstairs, Ms. Sterling; it is time to deliver the final blow.”
