Chapter 12 - The Auction of Vanity

Three months after the arrests at the estate, the United States Marshals Service hosted the largest public asset forfeiture auction in the history of the state of Illinois. The grand sixty-million-dollar coastal estate was filled with hundreds of high-society bidders, international art collectors, and museum curators.

Every room was stripped of Eleanor and Bianca’s extravagant vanity: rare fur coats, diamond necklaces, customized sports cars, and imported Italian furniture were tagged with bright yellow federal seizure labels. Every dollar raised from the auction was legally earmarked to establish the Marcus Sterling Memorial Pediatric Trauma Center.

I stood on the second-floor mezzanine, holding three-month-old Alexander in my arms while Charles held little Gabriel beside me. Both boys were dressed in warm white cotton rompers, looking healthy, radiant, and full of life as they watched the sunlight dance across the crystal chandeliers.

Below us in the grand foyer, the auctioneer’s wooden mallet banged down sharply: “Sold! The five-carat emerald solitaire for three point eight million dollars to the private bidder on the phone!”

A ripple of polite applause echoed through the vast hall where Julian and Eleanor had once laughed about throwing my sons into the snow. The very jewelry Eleanor had worn while mocking my dignity was now being converted into life-saving medical equipment for underprivileged children across the nation.

“The total proceeds from today’s auction have just surpassed seventy-five million dollars, Ms. Sterling,” Charles announced with a proud, warm smile. “The pediatric hospital construction in Detroit will break ground next month ahead of schedule.”

I kissed Alexander’s soft forehead, feeling the overwhelming peace of absolute justice settle over my heart. “My father always said that wealth is meaningless unless it serves as a shield for those who cannot fight for themselves, Charles.”

“Your father’s legacy is in the best hands possible, Victoria,” Charles replied, gently patting Gabriel’s tiny back. “And these two young men will grow up knowing that their mother conquered an entire army of wolves with honor and truth.”

Down on the driveway, the moving vans finished loading the last of the seized luxury vehicles, clearing the granite colonnade where I had stood in the blizzard three months prior. The cold slush was gone, replaced by blooming spring tulips and the gentle warmth of the morning sun.
