Chapter 13 - The Federal Reckoning

The grand federal sentencing trial of Julian Vance and Eleanor Vance convened in Courtroom 2501 of the Dirksen Federal Building in downtown Chicago. The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity with over four hundred spectators, national journalists, and legal scholars from across the globe.
Julian and Eleanor sat at the defense table in bright orange Department of Corrections jumpsuits, their wrists and ankles bound in heavy iron chains that clanked ominously against the floor. Julian looked gaunt and hollow, his hair thinning, his arrogant posture completely crushed beneath the weight of his absolute ruin.
Judge Evelyn Cross took her seat at the high mahogany bench, her expression stern and unyielding as she reviewed the jury’s unanimous guilty verdicts on all sixty-four felony counts. She adjusted her reading glasses, leaning forward over the bench to deliver the historic sentence.
“In my thirty-five years on the federal bench, I have rarely witnessed such callous, calculated depravity disguised as high-society ambition,” Judge Cross stated, her voice echoing through the silent chamber. “Eleanor Vance, for the premeditated murder of Marcus Sterling, the attempted murder of two newborn infants, and multi-state corporate fraud, you are sentenced to forty-five years in federal maximum-security prison without the possibility of parole.”
Eleanor collapsed forward onto the table, sobbing in utter despair as two female federal marshals immediately moved to secure her arms. “You will serve your sentence at the Federal Medical Center in Carswell, Texas, where you will remain in solitary confinement,” the judge continued mercilessly.
Judge Cross then turned her piercing gaze toward Julian, whose shoulders shook with violent, pathetic sobs as he stared at the floor. “Julian Vance, for your direct leadership in corporate treason, attempted murder of minors, and interstate racketeering, you are sentenced to two consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole.”

“You will be remanded immediately to the United States Penitentiary Administrative Maximum Facility in Florence, Colorado,” Judge Cross declared, slamming her heavy wooden gavel onto the bench three times. “Court is officially adjourned!”
Julian looked back over his shoulder one final time, his eyes pleading desperately toward where I sat in the front row of the gallery holding my twin sons. I did not look away; I met his gaze with calm, serene indifference as the marshals hauled him through the heavy iron door into eternal oblivion.
