Chapter 5 - The Poison in the Nursery

While federal marshals secured Julian and Eleanor in the grand foyer, Dr. Chloe Adams and a specialized HAZMAT forensic team walked down the second-floor hallway. Dr. Adams carried a portable mass spectrometer and a series of amber evidence jars collected from the master nursery.

She descended the marble staircase, her face pale with grave fury as she approached the federal command table. “Victoria, we just completed the chemical swab of the nursery humidifier and the daily formula canisters stored in the pantry.”

Agent Reed stepped forward, his eyes narrowing at the digital readout displayed on Dr. Adams’s diagnostic tablet. “What did your team find in the children’s room, Doctor?”

“We found lethal concentrations of synthetic digitalis and localized neurotoxins coated along the interior mist nozzles of the nursery humidifier,” Dr. Adams revealed with chilling clinical precision. “The dosage was calculated to induce sudden respiratory arrest in newborn infants within forty-eight hours of continuous inhalation.”

The entire room fell into a horrifying, frozen void as the sickening reality of their cruelty landed on everyone present. Even the hardened federal marshals looked down at Julian with expressions of pure, unadulterated disgust.

I looked at Eleanor, who was shaking violently against the balustrade, her aristocratic facade completely shattered. “You didn't just want to cast my sons out into the storm, Eleanor; you intended to murder them in their cribs before you threw me away.”

“They were bastard children who threatened Julian’s sole inheritance!” Eleanor suddenly shrieked, her sanity completely unraveling in front of the federal cameras. “They had no right to Marcus Sterling’s empire! I spent thirty years building that fortune for my son!”

“Your son had no claim to that fortune to begin with, Eleanor,” Charles said, pulling the sealed DNA documents from his briefcase. “Because Julian isn't Marcus Sterling’s nephew; he is the biological son of Thomas Cross, your former driver.”

Julian’s head snapped up from the cold marble floor, blood dripping from his split lip as his mother’s deepest secret was laid bare. “What did you say…? Mother, what is he talking about? Who is Thomas Cross?”

Eleanor buried her face in her trembling, manicured hands, letting out a wail of utter, agonizing defeat that echoed through the dark mansion. “Thomas was the only man who ever truly loved me… I had to switch the birth certificates to ensure you would inherit the trust!”

Julian began to scream in raw, animal agony, thrashing against his handcuffs like a wounded beast as his entire identity was annihilated in a matter of seconds. He was not an elite aristocrat born to rule an empire; he was a fraudulent pawn born of deceit, raised on stolen wealth, and doomed to die in a cage.
