Chapter 11 - The DNA Bombshell

In courtroom 2204 of the federal building, Eleanor Vance was brought before the emergency magistrate for her formal arraignment. She wore an orange Department of Corrections jumpsuit, her once-immaculate hair wild and unkempt, her hands shaking violently in her iron handcuffs.
Standing beside her was a court-appointed public defender, as every private defense attorney in the city had refused to take her case following the release of the wiretapped confessions. Eleanor glared across the courtroom at the prosecution table where I sat beside Charles, her eyes burning with desperate, venomous hatred.
“Your Honor, my client is an elderly matriarch of advanced social standing!” the public defender argued weakly before the bench. “She is suffering from severe cardiovascular distress and should be granted medical release under home confinement.”
Prosecutor Montgomery rose to her feet, stepping forward to the podium with a folder stamped with the official seal of the Illinois Department of Public Health. “Your Honor, the defendant’s entire legal identity is built on three decades of criminal fraud and identity theft.”
Montgomery opened the folder, projecting high-resolution certified DNA profiles onto the large wall monitors for the entire courtroom to see. “These genetic records, verified by three independent forensic laboratories, prove that Eleanor Vance is not related to the Sterling family by blood or lawful marriage.”
The gallery of journalists and observers gasped in astonishment as the charts displayed the conclusive genetic match between Julian Vance and Thomas Cross. “Thirty years ago, following the tragic infant death of her legitimate child, Eleanor substituted the biological child of Thomas Cross to fraudulently claim an eighty-million-dollar inheritance from Marcus Sterling’s estate.”
Eleanor let out a blood-curdling shriek from the defense table, lunging toward the projection screen before two federal marshals pinned her shoulders to her chair. “You have no right to show those files! I raised that boy! I made him a gentleman!”
“You raised a criminal to steal a fortune that belonged to the people of this city, Eleanor,” Prosecutor Montgomery stated with absolute authority. “And you attempted to murder two innocent infants to conceal your thirty-year fraud.”

The federal magistrate slammed his heavy wooden gavel onto the bench with thunderous finality. “Bail is denied with prejudice on all counts; the defendant is remanded to the Metropolitan Correctional Center pending trial for first-degree murder, attempted murder of minors, and interstate racketeering.”
As Eleanor was dragged through the prisoner exit, screaming curses into the flashing cameras of the press corps, I sat tall and serene, knowing that the thirty-year shadow hanging over my family had finally been banished forever.
