Chapter 9 - THE LIFE THEY HAD WRITTEN FOR ME

The first appointment under my name occurred six years and ten months earlier.

Two months after my wedding.

Diagnosis:

Generalized anxiety.

Then depression.

Then paranoia.

Then “episodes of emotional dysregulation.”

All fictional.

Vanessa had attended some appointments pretending to be me.

Other notes appeared to be fabricated completely.

Daniel had built a medical story alongside our marriage.

A backup plan.

If I ever discovered the finances.

If I ever tried to leave.

If I ever stopped behaving.

He could say I was sick.

Unreliable.

Confused.

It explained so much.

Every time I questioned a missing document, he asked whether I was sleeping enough.

Every time I objected to Vanessa's involvement in our marriage, he said pregnancy hormones were making me suspicious.

He hadn't invented gaslighting.

But he'd industrialized it.

Dad sat beside me.

“I should have fought harder to reach you.”

“No.”

He looked surprised.

“I stopped answering.”

“Because he manipulated you.”

“I still stopped.”

Both things could be true.

I had been deceived.

I had also made choices inside that deception.

Healing, I realized, might require holding both without using either as a weapon.

The hospital ethics office and law enforcement moved quickly.

Dr. Morris was suspended pending investigation.

Records were secured.

Vanessa requested immunity in exchange for cooperation.

Adam was furious.

“She doesn't deserve immunity.”

I looked at him.

“Maybe not.”

“But?”

“But I want everything.”

Not revenge.

Truth.

Every document.

Every account.

Every lie.

If Vanessa could help dismantle the structure Daniel built, I wanted her talking.

She agreed to meet investigators.

Not me.

I wasn't ready.

Two days later, Lily graduated from respiratory support.

I held her against my chest for the first time.

Skin to skin.

She smelled like warm milk and something impossibly new.

Samuel stood nearby.

“She knows your voice.”

I smiled through tears.

“I talked to her all the time.”

“She heard you.”

That thought mattered.

Even when Daniel ignored me.

Even when Vanessa betrayed me.

My daughter had been listening.

That evening, Dad came in with a file.

“We found the inside contact.”

My stomach tightened.

The person at Bennett Financial who helped Daniel access trust information.

“Who?”

Dad sat down.

“Caroline's son.”

I frowned.

“Aunt Caroline had a son?”

Silence.

Dad looked at Mom.

Then back at me.

“Yes.”

I had never known.

“His name is Eric Vale.”

The name meant nothing.

Then Dad showed me a photograph.

I recognized the man immediately.

He was Daniel's chief financial officer.

Eric Vale had attended my wedding.

Sat three tables from my family.

Shaken my father's hand.

And apparently, he wasn't just an employee.

He was my cousin.

Then Dad revealed the secret everyone had hidden.

“Caroline was pregnant when she left Edward Pierce.”

I stared.

“No.”

Dad's voice broke.

“Eric is Edward Pierce's biological son.”

May you like

Daniel's CFO was also Daniel's half-brother.

And he had spent years helping Daniel steal from the Bennett family that had hidden his existence.
