Chapter 11 - THE MOMENT I STOPPED WANTING AN EXPLANATION

Until that recording, some stupid part of me still wanted Daniel to explain.
Not excuse.
Explain.
I wanted one sentence that would make seven years fit inside reality.
Maybe he'd loved me and become corrupted.
Maybe Vanessa manipulated him too.
Maybe money changed him.
Then I heard his voice discussing my possible death as a convenience.
Something inside me closed.
Not my capacity to feel.
My need for his explanation.
I no longer needed Daniel to tell me who he was.
He already had.
The district attorney added conspiracy and fraud charges.
Dr. Morris was arrested.
Eric entered a cooperation agreement.
Vanessa remained under investigation.
Daniel's access to Pierce Development accounts was frozen.
Then his board removed him as CEO.
By the end of the week, the man who had controlled every room he entered couldn't access his own corporate office.
I should have felt victorious.
Instead, I was exhausted.
Lily still weighed less than five pounds.
My blood pressure remained unstable.
I was learning how to feed a premature baby while attorneys asked me to identify signatures.
My mother noticed first.
“Enough.”
Dad stopped mid-sentence.
“Helen—”
“No more documents in this room today.”
I almost smiled.
My mother hadn't changed.
I'd forgotten that I loved that about her.
Adam brought terrible hospital coffee.
Dad read business news silently.
Mom brushed my hair.
For the first time in years, being cared for didn't feel like surrender.
Samuel checked on Lily daily.
Always professionally.
Always kind.
There was no dramatic romance.
I wasn't ready for one.
What I needed was safety without obligation.
He seemed to understand that.
One evening he found me crying beside Lily's incubator.
“Bad day?”
“Good day.”
He waited.
“She gained three ounces.”
“That is good.”
“I know.”
I wiped my face.
“I think I'm crying because nobody can take this away from me.”
Samuel looked at Lily.
“No one gets to decide what being her mother means except you.”
The words landed somewhere deep.
Then security called.
Daniel was downstairs.
Not requesting entry.
Demanding it.
He had obtained an emergency family-court order allowing supervised access to information about Lily.
Not physical access yet.
Information.
But attached to his filing was an affidavit.
From Vanessa.
I stared.
“She gave him a statement?”
Dad's attorney read it.
Vanessa claimed I had always been jealous of her.
Emotionally unstable.
Possessive.
That I had misunderstood the kiss.
That Daniel restrained me only to prevent me from falling.
It contradicted everything she told investigators.
Adam swore.
“She switched sides.”
Maybe.
Then I noticed the date.
The affidavit had been signed four months earlier.
Vanessa hadn't switched sides.
Daniel had prepared her statement long before the hospital.
They had planned for this exact kind of confrontation.
And at the bottom was a second witness signature.
Dr. Samuel Price.
I looked up at him.
May you like
Samuel had gone pale.
“That is not my signature.”
