Chapter 7 - THE PLAN TO TAKE MY DAUGHTER AND MY MONEY

The petition was worse than I imagined.

Daniel claimed I had become emotionally unstable during pregnancy.

Paranoid.

Erratic.

Unable to manage finances.

A danger to myself.

Potentially a danger to the baby.

The evidence attached included texts I had never sent.

Emails I had never written.

Even a statement from someone claiming to be my therapist.

I didn't have a therapist.

Not then.

The fake therapist's name was Dr. Elaine Morris.

Samuel recognized it.

“She works with Pierce Development.”

“How?”

“She does executive evaluations for their insurance program.”

Dad's attorney found more.

Daniel planned to file immediately after delivery.

If successful, he could seek temporary financial guardianship.

Control access to my trust.

And argue that our daughter should remain primarily with him while I underwent “treatment.”

My stomach turned.

“He was going to take my baby.”

My mother gripped my hand.

“He's not.”

The words were firm.

Simple.

I believed her.

For the first time in years, I wasn't facing Daniel alone.

Then I saw my daughter.

They wheeled me to the neonatal unit in a wheelchair.

She lay inside an incubator under soft lights.

A tiny cap covered her head.

Her chest moved quickly.

But she was breathing.

I pressed my fingers through the opening.

She wrapped one hand around my fingertip.

My world narrowed to that touch.

“What are you naming her?” Mom asked.

Daniel and I had spent months arguing.

He liked Madison.

I liked Lily.

He said Lily sounded weak.

Now I looked at my daughter.

“Lily.”

Mom smiled.

“Lily Bennett?”

I hesitated.

Not Pierce.

Not after tonight.

“Lily Claire Bennett.”

My mother cried.

So did I.

When we returned to my room, a detective waited.

Daniel had posted bail on the assault-related charge, but financial crimes were still being investigated.

Vanessa had not been arrested.

Yet.

“She gave a statement,” the detective said.

“What kind?”

“She claims Daniel manipulated her.”

I laughed.

Of course she did.

“Did she mention helping him target me?”

The detective's expression changed.

“You know about that?”

“We found old messages.”

He nodded slowly.

“Then you need to see this.”

Vanessa had turned over a recording made three weeks earlier.

Daniel's voice.

He was angry.

“Once Claire delivers, we move. Her blood pressure gives us the opening. Morris signs the psychiatric recommendation. I take temporary control. By the time she fights it, Zurich is funded.”

Vanessa asked:

“And me?”

Daniel answered:

“You get what I promised.”

“What did he promise her?” I asked.

The detective pressed play.

Daniel laughed.

“Half of Claire's trust once the loans clear.”

My chest tightened.

Then Vanessa said something that made everyone in the room go still.

“That's not enough anymore. Not after what I did to Mom.”

The recording ended.

I stared at the detective.

“What did she do to our mother?”

My mother was standing beside me.

Alive.

Confused.

Then Adam slowly looked toward her.

“Mom… remember the car accident three years ago?”

May you like

Her face changed.

Vanessa had been driving.
