Chapter 1 - THE MEETING THEY DIDN'T WANT ME TO KNOW ABOUT

David Foster did not ask me to meet him at Sterling Dynamics.
He asked me to meet him in a coffee shop twelve miles from the airport.
That frightened me more than if he had suggested a lawyer’s office.
When I arrived, Sterling’s chief financial officer was sitting in the back corner with his laptop closed and both hands around untouched coffee.
“Clara.”
“David.”
He looked toward the entrance before speaking.
“Did Ethan see my message?”
“No.”
“Good.”
I sat.
“What do I need to know about Chloe?”
David exhaled.
“Three months ago, Chloe requested access to Sterling’s capitalization records.”
“That’s not secretary-level access.”
“I denied it.”
“And?”
“Ethan approved it personally.”
My stomach tightened.
“What records?”
“Your family trust investment. The patent licensing agreements. Voting rights. Emergency control provisions.”
The exact documents that had saved Sterling Dynamics four years earlier.
“Why would Chloe need those?”
“Officially? Preparing materials for investors.”
“Unofficially?”
David opened his laptop.
“Someone has been restructuring the company.”
A diagram appeared.
Sterling Dynamics at the center.
Three new subsidiaries.
One acquisition vehicle.
Several offshore financing entities.
My name appeared nowhere.
“Ethan approved this?”
“Parts of it.”
“Does he know what all of it does?”
“I don’t know anymore.”
That answer hurt almost as much as the jet.
David enlarged a board notice.
An emergency meeting had been scheduled for Monday morning.
The agenda included a “strategic recapitalization.”
“What does that mean?”
“They want to issue enough new voting shares to reduce your family trust’s influence.”
I stared at him.
“My trust put one and a half billion dollars into Sterling.”
“I know.”
“And provided access to thirteen patents.”
“I know.”
“Without those patents, this company would have collapsed.”
“I know.”
My voice became quieter.
“So Ethan is trying to dilute me out of the company I saved.”
David hesitated.
“That’s what it looks like.”
I thought about Chloe wrapped in my blanket.
Ethan telling me to remember my place.
Margaret calling me spoiled.
Maybe the humiliation had not begun on the jet.
Maybe the jet was simply the first time they stopped hiding it.
“Why are you telling me?”
David looked genuinely ashamed.
“Because I should’ve told you sooner.”
He turned the laptop toward me again.
A confidential memo authorized the recapitalization.
Ethan Sterling’s signature appeared at the bottom.
But another signature was required.
Mine.
I had never seen the document.
Yet my electronic signature was already there.
“That isn’t mine.”
“I know.”
“How?”
David clicked the file properties.
The authorization had been created at 1:06 A.M. three nights earlier.
On a company laptop assigned to Chloe Mercer.
May you like
My husband’s secretary had not merely taken my seat on the plane.
She had apparently taken my signature too.
