Chapter 12 - THE FORGERY THAT FINALLY BROKE THEIR STORY

Samuel's forged signature became the mistake Daniel couldn't explain away.

Unlike my signature, which appeared across years of documents Daniel had easy access to, Samuel's professional signature was tightly controlled.

Hospital records proved where Samuel was when the affidavit was supposedly signed.

He had been performing surgery.

Security footage confirmed it.

The notary listed on the affidavit did not exist.

The document was fraudulent.

And because Daniel had submitted it to court, the lie became much harder to hide behind lawyers.

The emergency order was withdrawn.

The judge ordered an independent review of every filing Daniel had made regarding me or Lily.

Then the financial case widened.

The FBI became involved because funds had crossed state and international lines.

Pierce Development's stock plunged.

Projects stopped.

Employees feared losing jobs.

That bothered me more than I expected.

Daniel had hurt hundreds of people who had nothing to do with us.

So when the board asked whether my family would support a restructuring, I agreed to attend remotely.

Dad looked surprised.

“You don't owe them anything.”

“No.”

I looked at Lily sleeping beside me.

“But innocent people work there.”

The Bennett trust provided temporary financing only under strict conditions.

Daniel permanently removed.

Independent audit.

Employee payroll protected.

Retirement funds restored first.

No family control.

No quiet settlement.

Everything documented.

Dad smiled faintly.

“You sound like your grandfather.”

“I hope that's not an insult.”

“Usually.”

For the first time in days, we laughed.

Vanessa asked to see me again.

This time, I said yes.

Not alone.

A detective sat outside.

My mother remained in the room.

Vanessa looked awful.

No makeup.

No cream cashmere.

No confidence.

“I know you hate me.”

“I don't know what I feel.”

She started crying.

“I loved him first.”

I waited.

There it was.

The story she had probably told herself for years.

“We met before you,” she said. “He told me he couldn't be with me publicly because of my divorce. Then he met you.”

“Because you introduced him to my finances.”

She flinched.

“I didn't know how far he'd take it.”

“You told him about my trust.”

“Yes.”

“You pretended to be me at medical appointments.”

Her face collapsed.

“Yes.”

“You helped him build a case to take my money and my daughter.”

“I thought he'd never actually use it.”

I stared at her.

“You keep describing crimes like drafts.”

She covered her face.

Then whispered:

“There's one thing I never told him.”

I felt nothing but caution.

“What?”

“When Mom crashed, I wasn't reaching for her phone.”

Mom stiffened beside me.

Vanessa looked directly at her.

“I was trying to stop her from calling Claire.”

My stomach dropped.

“Why?”

“Because she had found something Daniel didn't know she found.”

“What?”

Vanessa opened her bag slowly and placed an old key on the table.

“Mom found a storage locker Daniel's father rented before he died.”

My mother stared at the key.

“I thought that was lost.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I took it from the car after the crash.”

Inside the storage locker, she said, was evidence Edward Pierce had kept on everyone.

Including Daniel.

And one document Daniel had spent years trying to find.

A letter proving that Edward Pierce never intended Daniel to inherit Pierce Development at all.
