Chapter 10 - THE BROTHER DANIEL NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED

Eric Vale had grown up believing the Bennetts abandoned his mother.

Some of that belief was justified.

Caroline had been pregnant, unmarried, humiliated, and furious.

My grandfather helped her financially but demanded silence because of the scandal.

She moved to Michigan.

Raised Eric under another surname.

After her death, Eric found letters proving Edward Pierce was his father.

Daniel found him first.

That was the part that mattered.

“He recruited Eric?” I asked.

Dad nodded.

“Ten years ago.”

Before Daniel met me.

The plan was older than our marriage.

Eric joined Pierce Development.

Rose through finance.

Gained access to Bennett information through old family connections.

Then Daniel learned exactly how my trust worked.

I felt physically sick.

“Was anything between Daniel and me real?”

No one answered.

Because no one could.

That question would follow me for a long time.

The detective arranged an interview with Eric.

He came voluntarily.

Tall.

Quiet.

Nothing like Daniel.

When he entered my hospital room, he looked at Lily's bassinet first.

Then at me.

“I'm sorry.”

I almost laughed.

Apparently everyone had brought the same opening line.

“You helped forge documents.”

“Yes.”

“You helped him steal from me.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Vanessa was pretending to be me at medical appointments.”

His face tightened.

“No.”

That surprised me.

“I found out three months ago.”

“And did nothing?”

“I started copying records.”

He placed a flash drive on the table.

Daniel had been moving money far beyond my trust.

Investor funds.

Construction escrow accounts.

Employee retirement money.

My money was simply the easiest source of collateral.

“Why are you giving this to me?”

Eric looked exhausted.

“Because Daniel promised he'd acknowledge me publicly as his brother once Zurich closed.”

I understood then.

Daniel had found another person with an old wound and used exactly the right promise.

For me, love.

For Vanessa, security and status.

For Eric, family.

“What changed?”

“He never planned to acknowledge me.”

Eric laughed bitterly.

“I found an email calling me ‘the useful bastard.’”

Cruelty had finally reached the person helping him.

Eric cooperated.

The flash drive contained enough evidence to freeze several major transactions.

Pierce Development's board called an emergency meeting.

Investors panicked.

Daniel appeared on television outside his attorney's office.

Perfect suit.

Calm expression.

He denied everything.

Called the allegations a “family dispute amplified by medical stress.”

There it was.

My fake illness already being used.

Then a reporter asked whether he'd assaulted his pregnant wife.

Daniel smiled sadly.

“My wife is going through a very difficult postpartum medical situation. I love her, and I won't attack her publicly.”

My blood boiled.

He had transformed silence into a weapon again.

Then another reporter shouted:

“Is it true your CFO is your half-brother?”

Daniel's face changed.

For only one second.

But cameras caught it.

That night, Vanessa finally gave investigators her full statement.

And in exchange, she surrendered one last recording.

Daniel speaking to Dr. Morris.

“If Claire dies during delivery, everything becomes cleaner.”

My mother dropped the phone.

I couldn't move.

The recording continued.

Dr. Morris asked:

“And if she survives?”

May you like

Daniel answered:

“Then we make sure nobody believes her.”
