Chapter 5 - THE SISTER WHO INTRODUCED MY HUSBAND TO MY LIFE

I had spent years believing Vanessa needed me.

She was my younger half-sister by three years.

Different fathers.

Same mother.

When her marriage collapsed, I'd paid part of her rent.

When she needed a job, I'd called Daniel.

When she cried that she felt like the failure of the family, I'd told her she wasn't.

Now Margaret claimed Vanessa had known Daniel before I did.

“Prove it.”

Margaret removed an old hotel receipt from the box.

A conference in Milwaukee.

Eight years earlier.

Two rooms.

One charged to Daniel Pierce.

One to Vanessa Bennett.

My stomach turned.

“We weren't together then,” I said.

Margaret nodded.

“You hadn't met him.”

Adam swore.

Dad looked as though he might be sick.

I remembered Vanessa returning from a “marketing conference” that year.

She'd told me she'd met someone complicated.

Wouldn't give me a name.

Months later, after I started dating Daniel, she'd acted surprised.

Then thrilled.

Too thrilled?

I couldn't trust my own memory anymore.

My entire past felt contaminated.

“Were they together?”

Margaret sighed.

“I don't know what they were.”

That almost made it worse.

Dr. Alvarez interrupted.

“We are not continuing this conversation while Claire's blood pressure is this high.”

For once, everyone obeyed.

They moved me into a delivery room.

Medication burned cold through my IV.

The monitors around my daughter became the center of the universe.

For thirty minutes, nobody mentioned Daniel.

Then my baby's heart rate dipped.

Once.

Recovered.

Dipped again.

Dr. Alvarez's expression changed.

“We may need to deliver.”

My fear swallowed the betrayal.

“Is she in distress?”

“Not yet. But your condition is worsening, and I don't want to wait for an emergency.”

I cried.

My mother held me.

Dad stood helplessly near the wall.

Adam stared out the window like he needed something to punch.

I asked the question every terrified mother asks.

“Will she be okay?”

Dr. Alvarez took my hand.

“We have an excellent neonatal team. Thirty-four-week babies often do very well.”

Often.

Not guaranteed.

But hope.

I nodded.

“Do it.”

The room moved quickly after that.

Consent forms.

Anesthesiology.

Surgical preparation.

Then Nurse Kelly returned.

“Claire, Daniel is asking to be present for the delivery.”

I stared at her.

The father of my child.

The man who hadn't asked about her once until now.

I wanted to say no immediately.

Then guilt arrived.

What if something happened?

What if my daughter lived and one day asked why her father wasn't there?

What if she didn't—

I stopped that thought.

“Does he know we're delivering?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Kelly hesitated.

“He says Vanessa told him.”

Vanessa wasn't supposed to know anything.

Security had blocked her.

My chart was restricted.

“How did Vanessa know?”

No one answered.

Adam's expression sharpened.

“Someone inside the hospital is feeding them information.”

My father reached for his phone.

Then the surgical doors opened.

A neonatal nurse entered.

Behind her stood a man wearing scrubs.

He removed his mask.

I recognized him.

Dr. Samuel Price.

Chief of neonatology.

And Vanessa's ex-husband.

The man she had claimed abused her during their divorce.

He looked at me.

“Claire, before we take you to surgery, there's something you need to know about Vanessa.”

My heart thudded.

He glanced toward the hallway.

“Her divorce wasn't because I hurt her.”

May you like

He lowered his voice.

“It was because I found messages between her and Daniel.”
