Chapter 4 - THE SECRET DANIEL'S MOTHER KEPT

Margaret Pierce had always intimidated me.
Elegant.
Controlled.
Never warm enough to be cruel.
Never kind enough to trust.
At my wedding, she'd kissed my cheek and whispered, “I hope you know what you're doing.”
For seven years, I assumed she meant I wasn't good enough for Daniel.
Now she placed the metal box on my hospital table.
“My husband did something similar.”
I stared.
“Daniel's father?”
She nodded.
Edward Pierce had died nine years earlier.
Officially, he'd been a respected developer.
Unofficially, according to Margaret, he'd spent years hiding debt, forging documents, and using family members as financial shields.
“Daniel knew?” I asked.
“He found out after Edward died.”
“And learned from him.”
Margaret's face tightened.
“I hoped he would learn what not to become.”
She opened the box.
Inside were letters, ledgers, and one photograph.
My mother picked it up.
Her face changed.
It showed Margaret twenty-five years younger standing beside my aunt Caroline Bennett.
Caroline had died when I was a teenager.
My father's younger sister.
“What does Aunt Caroline have to do with this?”
Dad looked ill.
Margaret answered.
“Caroline was engaged to Edward before he married me.”
The room went silent.
My mother turned toward Dad.
“You never told me.”
“I didn't know all of it.”
Margaret continued.
Caroline discovered Edward had forged her signature on property documents.
She broke off the engagement and threatened to report him.
Days later, Edward disappeared from her life.
Years later, he married Margaret.
But the forged debt never disappeared.
It was quietly settled through Bennett family lawyers.
“Why would Daniel know about that?” Adam asked.
“Because Edward kept everything.”
Margaret looked at me.
“Daniel found the files when he was thirty.”
Five years before we married.
My skin went cold.
“So he knew my family before he met me?”
Margaret didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
“No.”
I shook my head.
“No, Daniel met me at that charity gala.”
Margaret's eyes filled with pity.
“I don't think it was accidental.”
My throat closed.
Daniel had walked up to me beside the champagne table.
Asked whether I was the woman who'd outbid him on a sculpture.
Made me laugh.
Three months later, we were inseparable.
One year later, married.
“What did he want?”
“Access,” Dad said.
I turned toward him.
“To what?”
“Your trust.”
Margaret nodded.
“Edward's files included a copy of the Bennett trust structure. Daniel knew your share would become fully accessible at thirty-five.”
I had turned thirty-five last year.
The same year Daniel began expanding Pierce Development aggressively.
The same year he'd convinced me to sign “estate planning” documents.
My chest tightened.
A monitor alarm sounded.
Dr. Alvarez came in immediately.
“Claire, your pressure is rising.”
Everyone backed away.
I tried to breathe.
Then Margaret caught my attention.
“There is one more thing you need to know.”
“Not now,” the doctor said.
Margaret nodded.
But she leaned close enough for only me to hear.
“Vanessa didn't begin the affair with Daniel.”
My eyes snapped to hers.
“She began working for him before you ever helped her get hired.”
I stared.
“That isn't possible.”
May you like
Margaret's next words were worse.
“Claire, your sister met Daniel before you did.”
