Chapter 9 - The Socialite’s Meltdown

Back up in the grand lobby, the scene had descended into absolute public spectacle as hundreds of onlookers gathered outside the glass perimeter. Chloe Kensington stood near the revolving doors, surrounded by reporters shouting questions about her father’s arrest and her fabricated status.
“Miss Kensington, did you know your father orchestrated the murder of Marcus Vance?” a lead journalist from the Chicago Tribune shouted into her face. “Were you aware that your family’s entire fortune was built on forged probate documents?”
Chloe shoved the microphones away frantically, her face red and contorted with hysterical rage. “Get those cameras out of my face! My father is an innocent man! We are the victims of a coordinated corporate coup!”
She turned around, pointing her manicured finger at the hotel staff standing behind the reception desk. “You ungrateful servants! I spent millions of dollars in this hotel! You will open those private elevators right now, or I will have every one of you blacklisted from the hospitality industry!”
The head concierge, a dignified elderly man named Robert who had served the Vance family for thirty years, looked at Chloe with calm, unyielding disdain. “Miss Kensington, your family accounts have a zero balance, and your credit facilities have been suspended globally.”
“I am a Kensington!” Chloe screamed, stamping her foot like a spoiled child. “You cannot treat me like this!”
Suddenly, the lobby’s overhead speakers broadcasted the crystal-clear 4K surveillance video captured twenty minutes prior. Projected across the gigantic digital screens was the exact footage of Chloe dragging Serena Vance across the obsidian floor, mocking her bruised face and kicking her raw knuckles.
The crowd outside the hotel windows gasped in collective disgust, people booing and shouting condemnations through the glass. The viral clip had already reached ten million views on social media within fifteen minutes, completely obliterating any shred of sympathy Chloe hoped to generate.

“Look at her,” a socialite in the gallery sneered loudly, tossing her champagne glass into a waste bin. “A vicious bully who beat the real owner while pretending to be an heiress.”
Chloe realized with horrifying finality that her social existence was permanently extinguished; she was no longer a glamorous debutante, but the most despised face in the United States. She collapsed onto her knees on the very spot where she had dragged Serena, sobbing in pure, undiluted humiliation as the cold rain lashed against the windows outside.
