Chapter 5 - The Black Box of Lake Shore Drive

The grand lobby was now fully illuminated by the blinding strobe of press photographers and the flashing blue beacons of arriving federal vehicles outside. Howard Kensington attempted to crawl toward the side luggage corridor, but Special Agent Nathan Reed stepped into his path, blocking the exit with his towering frame.
“Where do you think you’re going, Howard?” Agent Reed asked, flashing his gold FBI credentials. “We haven't even reviewed the audio recordings extracted from Marcus Vance’s recovered vehicular black box.”
Serena signaled the media technician, and the crystal-clear surround sound system of the atrium roared to life with an audio recording dated three weeks prior. The voice of Marcus Vance filled the vast hall, calm, steady, and heartbreakingly brave despite the sound of screeching tires and mechanical alarms in the background.
”Serena, if you are listening to this, the telemetry has failed, and Howard has made his move,” Marcus Vance’s voice echoed through the weeping crowd. ”Do not trust Victoria, do not trust the board; go to the underground archive at The Aurelia Grand and reclaim your birthright.”
The sound of a violent vehicular impact and shattering glass reverberated through the speakers, causing several elderly board members to openly sob into their hands. The final words of Marcus Vance lingered in the air like a sacred vow: ”The empire is yours, my brave girl… never let them take your crown.”
Serena closed her eyes for a single second, letting the grief wash over her soul before opening them with renewed, terrifying focus. She looked at Howard, who was now weeping pathetically on his knees among the scattered papers on the obsidian floor.
“My father knew he was dying, Howard, and his only thought was making sure I had the weapons to destroy you,” Serena spoke, her words hitting like steel hammers. “He recorded your voice on his private phone while you were discussing the offshore payment in his private study.”
The audio track shifted, playing Howard’s distinct, arrogant voice clearly commanding his technical operative: ”Ensure the steering module locks when he hits sixty miles per hour on the bridge curve; we cannot afford a survivor.”
The assembled high-society guests erupted into shouts of absolute outrage, former business partners spitting on the floor near Howard’s knees. The man who had spent forty years posturing as Chicago’s most distinguished philanthropist was exposed as a cold-blooded assassin.

“Take him away,” Agent Reed commanded his officers, who seized Howard by his tuxedo collar and hauled him to his feet. “Howard Kensington, you are charged with first-degree premeditated murder, federal corporate sabotage, and interstate racketeering.”
As Howard was dragged past his weeping daughter, Chloe reached out with trembling hands, but her father couldn't even meet her eyes. The house of cards had completely collapsed, leaving nothing behind but the bitter ashes of greed and betrayal.
