Chapter 6 - The Lockout Protocol

Serena turned her attention toward the grand marble reception desk, walking past the stunned hotel staff with the regal poise of an empress. She touched the biometric glass interface of the master terminal, pressing her thumb against the optical scanner.
The screen flashed bright green, accompanied by a soothing, automated voice that boomed across the entire sixty-story structure: ”Welcome, Chairman Serena Vance; Sovereign Master Access Granted.”
“Initiate Protocol Zero immediately,” Serena commanded into the terminal’s microphone. “Lock down all private suites, freeze every corporate expense account registered to the Kensington Trust, and cancel all executive keycards.”
Across the entire hotel, the heavy electromagnetic locks engaged with synchronized, echoing thuds that resonated through every floor. The digital display boards in the high-end luxury boutiques lining the mezzanine turned black, displaying the glowing silver Vance crest.
Julian Cross, Chloe’s fiancé, frantically tried to swipe his VIP access card at the private elevator leading to the penthouse suites. The scanner flashed red, letting out three high-pitched rejection beeps: ”ACCESS DENIED - ACCOUNT TERMINATED FOR EMBEZZLEMENT.”
Julian spun around, sweating through his shirt, only to find Elena Hayes, the head of Vance tactical security, standing three feet away with her arms folded across her chest. “Mr. Cross, your reservation in Penthouse A has been officially revoked by executive decree.”
“You can’t lock me out of my personal residence!” Julian shouted, backing away toward the grand staircase. “My company holds the exclusive marketing rights to this entire hotel development!”
“Your marketing contract was voided forty-eight hours ago when our forensic accountants discovered you siphoned eighteen million dollars through fake vendor invoices,” Elena replied calmly. “And the federal agents waiting at the loading dock have a search warrant for the two million dollars in bearer bonds currently sitting in your luggage.”
Julian looked around the lobby, seeing the contempt in the eyes of every person who had once courted his favor. He dropped his designer leather bag, raising his hands in defeat as two armed security officers pinned him against the marble balustrade.

Chloe stood alone in the center of the vast atrium, her emerald satin gown looking absurd and garish amidst the sea of federal agents and flashing cameras. Her social status, her wealth, her engagement, and her family name had been entirely eradicated in less than fifteen minutes.
Serena looked down at the disgraced socialite from the top of the grand marble staircase, her eyes shining with quiet, unshakeable power. “You told me paupers have no right breathing the air in this sanctuary, Chloe; now get out of my hotel before I have you removed in a federal transport van.”
