Chapter 7 - Julian’s Desperate Gamble

Julian Cross did not give up so easily; as the security officers reached for his wrists, he shoved the nearest guard with all his strength, diving over the mahogany counter into the concierge workspace.
He pulled a concealed titanium master key from his boot, sprinting down the private staircase toward the subterranean vault levels beneath the hotel.
“Stop him!” Elena Hayes shouted into her tactical radio, drawing her sidearm as she vaulted over the counter in pursuit. “He is heading for the secure safe deposit archive in Sub-Level Three!”
Serena did not panic; she walked briskly down the grand corridor toward the private elevator, accompanied by Arthur Montgomery and Agent Reed.
“Julian knows my father kept an emergency cache of physical bearer bonds and Swiss gold bullion in Vault 704.”
The elevator plunged through the subterranean foundation of the building, the digital floor indicator descending past the wine cellars and laundry facilities into the reinforced bedrock below.

The doors opened onto a climate-controlled corridor protected by three-inch-thick ballistic glass and biometric checkpoints.
At the end of the hall, Julian was frantically entering override codes into the electronic keypad of Vault 704, his hands covered in sweat. The heavy steel door groaned on its hydraulic hinges, swinging open just as Serena and the tactical team rounded the corner.
Inside the vault sat three heavy metal flight cases containing twenty million dollars in bearer bonds and untraceable diamonds that Julian and Howard had secretly stockpiled for their escape. Julian grabbed the handle of the nearest case, spinning around with a heavy iron pry bar raised above his head.
“Stay back, Serena!” Julian screamed, his sanity completely unraveling in the dim amber lighting of the vault. “I helped build this financial network! I deserve my cut of the estate!”
“You didn't build anything, Julian; you were a parasite living off the scraps Howard threw you under the table,” Serena said, stepping into the vault without a single flicker of fear. “You proposed to Chloe because you thought she would inherit my father’s empire, and now you have nothing left to trade.”
Elena Hayes moved with blinding, lethal speed, closing the distance in less than a second. She deflected the iron pry bar with her forearm guard, driving a crushing palm strike into Julian’s solar plexus that knocked the wind completely out of his lungs.
Julian collapsed onto the reinforced concrete floor, gasping for air as Elena twisted his arm behind his back and clicked the heavy steel handcuffs into place. The iron bar clattered harmlessly against the floorboards, its echo marking the definitive end of Julian Cross’s corporate ambitions.

Serena knelt down beside the fallen fixer, her voice soft, deadly, and intimate. “Tell the federal prosecutors everything about Howard’s European accounts, Julian, or spend the next thirty years sharing a cell with him in Marion Supermax.”
Julian sobbed against the cold concrete, nodding his head frantically in total submission. “I’ll talk… I’ll give you the Swiss server passcodes… I’ll testify against everyone… just don't let them put me away forever!”
