Chapter 2 - The Master Ledger Unsealed

Arthur Montgomery did not hesitate, marching down the center aisle of the atrium with the terrifying authority of a military commander. The crowd of elite socialites parted instantly, their smug grins fading into confusion as the federal agents formed an impenetrable perimeter around the fallen girl.
Chloe Kensington released her grip on Serena’s sweater, quickly adjusting the emerald satin over her shoulders and offering a practiced, patronizing smile. “Mr. Montgomery, thank goodness you arrived; our security team just apprehended a dangerous vagrant who snuck through the service bay.”
Arthur did not even glance at Chloe; he dropped to one knee directly onto the cold obsidian stone beside the bruised young woman. He pulled a clean linen handkerchief from his breast pocket, gently pressing it against the cut on Serena’s lower lip with trembling reverence.
“We received the encrypted distress signal forty-five seconds ago, Chairman Vance,” Arthur said, his deep voice carrying across the silent, breathless room. “The federal injunction is signed, the board has convened, and the empire is ready for your command.”
A collective, suffocating gasp surged through the ballroom as the word Chairman echoed off the gilded bronze columns. Chloe’s face turned an immediate, sickly shade of porcelain white, her hand freezing over the diamond choker resting against her throat.
“Chairman?” Chloe stammered, taking an involuntary step backward into the crowd of frozen billionaires. “Arthur, you must be completely insane; that is a dirty beggar off the street, not Marcus Vance’s daughter!”
Serena slowly rose to her full height, ignoring the sharp pain radiating from her bruised ribs and scraped knuckles. She brushed the dark strands of hair from her face, revealing the high cheekbones, commanding jawline, and piercing blue eyes that had defined the Vance dynasty for three generations.
“My father named this hotel after my mother, Chloe,” Serena said with absolute, lethal serenity. “And every single marble tile, every crystal pendant on those chandeliers, and every share of stock in your father’s holding company belongs to me.”
Arthur snapped the heavy brass locks of the titanium briefcase open, lifting a thick, gold-embossed ledger bound in dark calfskin. He turned the document toward the assembled press corps, revealing the unredacted certificate of sovereign corporate ownership bearing the official seal of the Supreme Court.
“As of midnight yesterday, following the formal conclusion of the probate audit, Serena Vance holds eighty-two percent of all voting shares in Vance Continental,” Arthur announced to the flashing cameras. “And under Section Twelve of the master deed, any individual who physically assaults the principal owner on company grounds is subject to immediate federal detention.”

Chloe began hyperventilating, clutching her fiancé Julian’s arm as the television cameras swung around to capture her utter, public humiliation. Julian quickly pulled his arm away from her grip, his eyes darting frantically toward the revolving doors as he realized the trap had closed around them both.
Serena stepped forward until she was standing barely six inches from Chloe’s trembling face. “You wanted to show the city what happens to paupers in your sanctuary, Chloe? Now let me show you what happens to thieves in mine.”
