Chapter 4 - The Stepmother’s Arrival

Before Howard could recover his composure, the heavy revolving doors of the hotel spun with aggressive speed. Victoria Sterling-Vance swept into the atrium, draped in an extravagant Russian sable coat and wearing a five-carat diamond solitaire that had once belonged to Serena’s late mother.
Victoria carried herself with haughty, untouchable arrogance, completely unaware that the live broadcast had already exposed the entire conspiracy. “Howard, what is the meaning of this delay? The board members are waiting in the penthouse ballroom for the liquidation signing ceremony!”
Victoria’s gaze swept across the crowded atrium, landing on the disheveled girl standing in the center of the federal security perimeter. Her crimson lips curled into a sneer of pure disgust as she recognized her stepdaughter.
“Serena? What grotesque stunt are you pulling now, you ungrateful little brat?” Victoria hissed, clicking her diamond-encrusted heels across the obsidian stone. “You should be in the private psychiatric retreat in Vermont where I enrolled you for your grief therapy.”
Serena turned slowly, meeting the woman who had spent four years pretending to be a loving maternal guardian while poisoning her family from within. “The psychiatric facility where you paid the chief physician half a million dollars to keep me chemically sedated until my twenty-fifth birthday, Victoria?”
Victoria froze mid-stride, her painted aristocratic mask cracking as she noticed the federal marshals with unholstered weapons standing beside Arthur Montgomery. She looked up at the gigantic 8K screens, gasping in horror as her own encrypted emails with Howard Kensington were displayed in towering letters.
“You thought you could erase my father, steal his company, and discard me like trash in an alley,” Serena said, her voice dropping into a register of absolute ice. “You forgot that my father taught me how to read corporate ledgers before I was ten years old.”
Arthur Montgomery stepped forward, holding up a red-sealed document bearing the signature of the Chief Judge of the Federal Northern District. “Victoria Sterling-Vance, under Federal Warrant 9044, you are officially stripped of all marital survivor benefits, testamentary allowances, and executive privileges.”
“You can’t do this to me!” Victoria shrieked, clutching her sable coat around her neck like a shield. “I was Marcus’s lawful wife! I have rights under Illinois estate law!”

“You ceased to have rights the moment you countersigned the murder contract in Zurich, Victoria,” Serena replied with chilling finality. “And tonight, you will leave this building in the exact same state you entered my father’s life—completely penniless.”
Two female federal officers stepped behind Victoria, grabbing her slender wrists and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around them with a sharp metallic clack. Victoria thrashing hysterically, screaming obscenities as the expensive sable fur was pulled from her shoulders to be logged as seized federal evidence.
