Chapter 1 - The Sixty-Second Countdown

The sharp clatter of Chloe Kensington’s designer stilettos reverberated across the polished black obsidian floor of The Aurelia Grand atrium like gunfire. Her manicured fingers remained coiled viciously around the collar of the worn charcoal cotton sweater, dragging the battered girl another ten feet toward the revolving glass doors.
Billionaires in tailored tuxedos and socialites draped in diamonds took amused sips of vintage champagne, laughing quietly behind delicate crystal flutes. Not a single person in the gilded lobby moved to intervene as a fresh drop of crimson dripped from the bruised girl's split lower lip onto the gleaming stone.
“Look at this pathetic street rat trying to crawl into our private charity gala,” Chloe sneered loudly, her shrill voice carrying effortlessly beneath the five-story crystal chandeliers. “She actually thought she could hide in the service corridors of the most exclusive hotel in Chicago without paying the price.”
Serena Vance did not scream, nor did she fight against the agonizing friction burning across her raw knuckles. Her piercing, ice-blue eyes remained locked onto the digital master clock mounted above the grand mezzanine archway.
The illuminated golden digits read 7:59:12 PM. Exactly forty-eight seconds remained before the scheduled arrival of the Vance Continental executive committee.
“Throw her into the rain and call the municipal precinct to have her locked up for trespassing,” Chloe commanded the two towering private security guards flanking her emerald satin gown. “Make sure the paparazzi outside get a clear photograph of what happens to beggars who disrespect the Kensington name.”
The lead security officer took a heavy step forward, reaching out with a gloved hand to seize Serena by her slender throat. Serena slowly lifted her bruised chin, meeting the guard's gaze with a chilling, unyielding calm that caused the man's fingers to freeze mid-air.
“You have thirty seconds to take your hands off me, Chloe,” Serena spoke in a low, resonant whisper that cut through the background hum of the string quartet. “Because when that clock strikes eight, you will realize this floor belongs to me.”
Chloe threw her head back and unleashed a mocking, high-pitched laugh that drew the attention of several national television camera crews set up near the red carpet. “You hear that, everyone? This filthy stray thinks she owns the six-star crown jewel of our city!”
The surrounding crowd chuckled with cruel delight, mocking the delusional words of the girl bleeding on their pristine floor. But high above the atrium, the private executive express elevator chimed with a deep, authoritative resonance that silenced the entire hall.

The illuminated brass indicator flashed the number eighty, descending with breathtaking speed toward the lobby level. The digital clock clicked to 8:00:00 PM, and the heavy double doors of the private elevator slid open with hydraulic precision.
A phalanx of eight armed federal marshals stepped onto the obsidian floor, flanked by senior forensic auditors and Chief Legal Counsel Arthur Montgomery. Arthur held a heavy titanium briefcase embossed with the sovereign gold crest of the Vance Continental Empire, his eyes blazing with fury as he surveyed the grand foyer.
