Chapter 4 - The Midnight Revelation

The grandfather clock chimed three in the morning as the heavy oak doors of the study opened once more.
Nora walked into the room, wrapped in a dark wool cardigan, her arms folded tightly across her chest as if trying to ward off the chill in the air.
She saw the scattered papers on the desk, the open silver locket, and the unmistakable genetic report resting under the green lamp.
Her steps faltered, and a single tear escaped her lash, tracing a silent path down her pale cheek.
Vincent stood up slowly, stepping out from behind the massive desk, stripping away every shred of his mafia kingpin aura.
He looked at her with eyes stripped bare of defenses, brimming with four years of unspeakable agony and rekindled love.
"Why didn't you tell me, Nora?" Vincent asked, his voice cracking like dry timber.
"Why did you let me walk past you in these hallways as if you were a stranger?"
Nora let out a broken, shuddering sob, burying her face in her trembling hands.
"Because Marco found me in the county hospital three weeks after the fire, Vincent!" she cried, her voice echoing off the book-lined walls.
"He stood over my recovery bed and showed me photographs of his execution squads!
He told me that if I ever uttered a single word to you, if I ever told you that I was carrying your child, he would execute Lily before she drew her first breath!"
Vincent’s heart tore in two as the full horror of her suffering washed over him.
"He forced me to take this housekeeping job under a fabricated identity six months ago," Nora wept, her knees buckling as she sank onto the velvet sofa.
"He wanted me close where he could watch me, threatening to hurt Lily every time I looked at you for too long!
I scrubbed these floors every day just to keep my baby fed, praying every night that God would protect her from the monsters in this house!"
Vincent dropped to his knees before her, taking her cold, scarred hands into his large, calloused palms.
"You are safe now, Nora," Vincent vowed, his forehead resting against hers as hot tears burned his own eyes.
"No one will ever threaten you or Lily again.
I swear on my mother's soul and my own life, Marco Bellini will pay for every tear you shed in the dark."
At that moment, the study door creaked open, and little Lily padded across the Persian rug in her mismatched socks.
She rubbed her sleepy eyes, dragging her plush bunny by its ear, and looked at Vincent kneeling on the floor.
"Why are you crying, mister?" Lily asked in her sweet, innocent voice.
"Did somebody break your toys again?"
Vincent choked back a sob, looking at his daughter’s messy auburn curls and fierce hazel eyes that mirrored his own so perfectly.
He reached out, his large hands gently lifting the little girl into his arms, holding her against his chest as if she were the most precious treasure on earth.
"No, sweetheart," Vincent whispered against her soft hair, feeling her tiny heartbeat against his collarbone.
