Chapter 13 - The Hospital Vigil

The private surgical wing of the Castiglione Medical Pavilion was bathed in the soft, golden light of the late afternoon sun.

Armed sentries stood at every hallway entrance, but inside Room 501, the atmosphere was peaceful, serene, and filled with quiet warmth.

Vincent lay propped up on the hospital bed, his left shoulder heavily bandaged, IV lines delivering antibiotics to ensure a full recovery.

Curled up on the mattress beside him, sleeping peacefully in a clean pair of yellow flannel pajamas, was little Lily.

Her small hand was wrapped tightly around Vincent’s thumb, her chest rising and falling in rhythmic, untroubled dreams.

Nora sat in the armchair beside the bed, peeling a fresh green apple with a silver knife, her face radiating a serene beauty that had returned after four years of darkness.

"The doctors said Lily has no physical trauma, Vincent," Nora said softly, handing him a slice of sweet fruit.

"Just a few minor scrapes that will heal in a week.

She is stronger than both of us combined."

Vincent smiled, looking down at his daughter’s sweet face, gently brushing a stray auburn curl from her forehead.

"She gets that from her mother," Vincent murmured, his eyes filled with profound tenderness.

"You survived four years of hell to protect our child, Nora.

I spent those years building an empire of blood, while you built a fortress of love."

Nora set the apple aside, taking Vincent’s uninjured hand into hers, her fingers intertwining with his calloused palm.

"We both did what we had to do to survive, Vincent," Nora whispered, resting her cheek against his hand.

"The past is behind us now.

What matters is what we build tomorrow."

A soft knock sounded at the door, and Captain Leo stepped inside holding a leather portfolio containing the morning syndicate reports.

"Boss, the regional council has assembled in the main conference suite," Leo reported quietly.

"All twenty underbosses are waiting for your orders regarding Marco’s liquidated assets and the redistribution of the northern shipping lines."

Vincent looked at Nora, then down at Lily sleeping peacefully against his side.

The throne that he had fought twenty years to claim suddenly looked like an empty, worthless pile of rust.

"Tell the council I am stepping down, Leo," Vincent said with quiet, absolute certainty.

Leo blinked in stunned disbelief.

"Stepping down, Don Vincent?

Who will lead the family?"

Vincent looked at his trusted captain with a calm, radiant smile.

"There is no family business anymore, Leo.
