Chapter 1 - The Viper's Ledger

The quiet morning mist crept over the limestone terraces of the Castiglione estate, wrapping the sprawling manor in an uneasy, suffocating shroud.

Vincent stood by the arched French doors of his private study, his obsidian eyes fixed on the damp gardens below where little Lily was chasing stray morning sparrows.

Her tiny laughter drifted upward, piercing through the cold armor he had worn around his heart for over two decades.

Beside his mahogany desk, Captain Leo stood waiting in disciplined silence, holding the leather-bound accounting ledgers that the discharged maid, Chloe, had dropped during yesterday’s commotion.

"You ran the forensic audit on the logistics ledgers, Leo?" Vincent asked, his voice low and raspy from a sleepless night of unsettling realizations.

"Every single column of numbers, Boss," Leo replied, stepping forward to lay the thick pages beneath the emerald desk lamp.

"The numbers were deliberately cooked over the last fourteen months across our transatlantic shipping terminals.

Someone has been skimming thirty percent of the port revenues and routing the liquidity through dummy corporations in Panama."

Vincent turned slowly, his sharp jaw tightening as the dim light caught the jagged scar along his collarbone.

"And who personally authorized the clearance codes for those Panamanian accounts?"

Leo hesitated for a fraction of a second before meeting his commander's icy gaze.

"Marco Bellini.

His private digital signature is stamped on every single wire transfer."

A suffocating tension filled the room, heavy enough to choke an ordinary man.

Marco had stood at Vincent’s right hand for ten years, sharing bread, blood, and the brutal rise to the absolute peak of the city's syndicate hierarchy.

"Marco was using Chloe to smuggle those forged books out of this study before my scheduled quarterly review," Vincent murmured, piecing together the treacherous puzzle.

"When the girl accidentally shattered my mother’s crystal music box, Marco seized the moment to blame Nora, hoping I would execute or banish her in a blind rage."

"If Nora had been thrown out, the distraction would have allowed Marco to quietly wipe the hard drives in the security annex," Leo added grimly.

"He didn't count on that fearless three-year-old standing between you and her mother."

Vincent’s mind flashed back to the fiery determination in Lily’s wide, hazel eyes—an unyielding spirit that felt hauntingly, undeniably familiar.

"Have our cyber division mirror Marco’s satellite communications without alerting his personal guard detail," Vincent commanded, his knuckles turning white against the mahogany surface.

"I want every bank account, every burner phone, and every meeting location logged in real time.

If my brother in arms has chosen treason, he will learn that my mercy died with my mother."

Just then, a soft knock sounded at the double doors, followed by the timid click of the brass handle.

Nora stepped into the study holding a silver tray with fresh black coffee, her auburn hair pulled back into a simple linen scarf.

Her fingers still trembled slightly as she set the porcelain cup beside the ledgers, keeping her eyes respectfully lowered.

"Good morning, Mr.

Castiglione," she whispered, her voice soft as velvet.

"I brought your morning roast, and...

I wanted to thank you again for the apology this morning."

Vincent looked at her gentle face, noticing the faint dark circles beneath her eyes and the delicate curve of her cheekbones that stirred a dormant, agonizing ache in his chest.

"You do not need to thank me for basic justice, Nora," Vincent said softly, stepping closer until her breath caught.

"You and Lily are under my personal protection within these walls.

If anyone in this house treats you with disrespect again, you come directly to me."

May you like

Nora’s hazel eyes lifted for a fleeting second, sparkling with an unspoken sorrow before she quickly curtsied and backed out of the room.

Vincent watched her leave, an electric shock of instinct whispering to his soul that Nora’s presence in his manor was not a mere coincidence of fate.
