Chapter 15 - The House of Sunflowers

One year later, the warm Pacific breeze rustled through thousands of golden sunflowers blooming along the coastal cliffs of Carmel, California.

Overlooking the sparkling blue waters of the ocean stood a magnificent, sun-drenched cedar farmhouse with wide wrap-around porches and floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

There were no high security walls, no armed sentries, and no locked iron vaults.

The air was sweet with the scent of blooming jasmine, sea salt, and the mouthwatering aroma of fresh sourdough bread baking in the outdoor stone oven.

On the lush green lawn, four-year-old Lily was running through the sprinkler mist with a golden retriever puppy named Barnaby.

Her auburn curls were wild in the afternoon sun, her joyful laughter echoing pure and untainted across the coastal meadows.

Vincent stood by the porch railing, wearing a comfortable denim shirt, holding a steaming mug of black coffee as he watched his daughter play.

His scars had healed, his sharp features softened by a year of laughter, peace, and unhurried mornings.

Nora walked out through the screen door, wearing a simple white sundress, carrying a wicker basket filled with freshly harvested garden vegetables.

She walked up beside Vincent, wrapping her arm around his waist, resting her head against his chest where his heart beat strong and steady.

"What are you thinking about, husband?" Nora asked softly, looking out at the endless blue horizon where the sun was beginning to dip into gold.

Vincent wrapped his arm around her shoulders, kissing the top of her head with infinite tenderness.

"I was thinking about the day a fearless little girl in mismatched socks stood up to the most dangerous man in the city," Vincent answered with a gentle, radiant smile.

"She saved my life, Nora.

You both saved my life."

Lily came sprinting up the wooden porch steps, her clothes soaked with sprinkler water, holding out a giant yellow sunflower to her father.

"Daddy! Daddy! Look at the biggest flower in the whole world!" Lily shouted proudly, pressing the blossom into his hand.

Vincent laughed—a deep, booming, joyful sound that carried across the gardens—and scooped his daughter into his arms, spinning her around the porch.

"It’s the most beautiful flower in the world, my brave little princess," Vincent said, kissing both of her wet cheeks.

Lily grinned triumphantly, tapping his nose with her tiny finger.

"I told you so, Daddy!"

Nora laughed, leaning into their embrace as the evening sun painted the Pacific sky in breathtaking hues of violet, rose, and brilliant gold.
