Chapter 2 - The Shadow in the Nursery

The grandfather clock in the main gallery chimed two in the morning, its resonant gong echoing through the cavernous corridors of the estate.
In the eastern staff wing, a floorboard groaned under the deliberate, stealthy pressure of a rubber-soled combat boot.
Marco Bellini moved through the shadows like a phantom, his tailored suit jacket unbuttoned to reveal the polished grip of a customized Glock 19 tucked into his shoulder holster.
His calculating eyes were fixed on Room 14—the modest bedroom assigned to Nora and her daughter.
Ever since Vincent’s uncharacteristic public apology at dawn, Marco’s instincts had warned him that the noose was tightening around his neck.
The boss had looked at the little girl not with the cold indifference of an underworld kingpin, but with a flicker of genuine humanity.
If Vincent looked too closely at Nora, if he asked the wrong questions about where she had lived four years ago, Marco’s grand design would burn to ashes.
Reaching the door of Room 14, Marco slipped a thin titanium bypass shim between the latch and the strike plate, easing the heavy wooden door open without a single click.
A dim nightlight in the shape of a yellow star illuminated the small room, casting soft warmth over the two narrow beds.
Little Lily was curled beneath a lavender quilt, clutching her battered gray plush bunny against her cheek, her chest rising and falling in rhythmic peace.
Nora lay on the adjacent twin bed, her face turned toward the window where the moonlight highlighted a delicate silver chain around her neck.
Marco stepped silently toward Nora’s bedside table, his gloved fingers reaching for the small velvet pouch where she kept her identification papers and personal jewelry.
He needed to erase every trace of her past before Vincent’s intelligence team began digging into her medical and employment records.
As his fingers brushed the velvet fabric, a deep, lethal voice shattered the darkness behind him.
"Lose something in the nursery, Marco?"
Marco’s heart violently seized in his ribs as he spun around, his hand flying toward his shoulder holster.
Before his fingers could even touch the leather, the cold, heavy barrel of a Kimber .
45 pressed hard against the soft hollow beneath his jawline.
Vincent stood in the doorway, clad in a black tactical sweater, his eyes glowing with predatory fury in the shadows.
Behind him, Leo and four armed sentries filled the narrow hallway, their submachine guns aimed with silent, deadly precision.
"V-Vincent..." Marco stammered, raising his hands in a placating gesture while fighting to steady his ragged breathing.
"I saw a suspicious silhouette near the east garden wall ten minutes ago...
I thought an intruder had breached the staff quarters."
Vincent didn't lower the firearm an inch; instead, he pushed the steel barrel harder into Marco’s throat until the lieutenant was forced onto his tiptoes.
"You expect me to believe you entered a sleeping mother's bedroom in the dead of night to look for garden intruders?" Vincent whispered, his tone dropping into a terrifyingly calm register.
"You have served me for a decade, Marco.
Do not insult my intelligence with lies that would embarrass a rookie foot soldier."
Lily stirred in her bed, letting out a small, sleepy whimper as she rubbed her eyes with her plush bunny.
"Mommy...
the scary man is here," Lily mumbled, sitting upright in the dim light.
Nora sat up instantly, pulling Lily behind her back, her face draining of all color as she recognized the tension in the room.
"Take Mr.
Bellini to the wine cellar vaults," Vincent ordered without taking his eyes off Marco’s sweating face.
