Chapter 3 - Secrets of the Safehouse

The heavy steel door of the underground vault slammed shut, leaving the estate’s private medical wing in quiet, sterile isolation.

Vincent sat in the leather armchair of his private study, holding a worn silver locket that Leo had retrieved from Nora’s bedside table during the commotion.

With a gentle click of his thumb, the clasp opened under the lamplight.

Inside was a miniature photograph of a burning timber lodge in the mountains of Northern California, and beside it, a tiny lock of baby hair tied with a violet ribbon.

A flood of buried memories struck Vincent’s mind like an avalanche of white-hot shrapnel.

Four years ago, during the bloody syndicate civil war that claimed his father's life, Vincent had been ambushed on Highway 101, taking three high-caliber rounds to his chest and abdomen.

He had dragged his bleeding body through the dense coastal redwood forest, finally collapsing onto the porch of an isolated mountain cabin.

When he opened his eyes days later, he was lying on a clean cot, his wounds meticulously sutured and dressed with sterile herbs and medical gauze.

The woman who had pulled him from the jaws of death was an enigmatic botanical illustrator and former clinic nurse named Nora Sullivan.

For two months, while the underworld burned in citywide bloodshed, Vincent had hidden in that peaceful sanctuary, discovering a pure, untainted love he had never thought possible for a monster like him.

They had shared quiet nights beside the wood stove, whispering dreams of a life far away from gunsmoke and blood-soaked ledger books.

But the syndicate war had found them.

On a rainy November midnight, an explosion ripped through the cabin, engulfing the timber walls in a roaring inferno.

Marco had dragged a half-conscious, screaming Vincent into an armored getaway vehicle, swearing through tears that Nora had been incinerated inside the burning bedroom.

Vincent had spent four years believing his soul had died in those flames, turning himself into a merciless tyrant who cared for nothing except territorial dominance.

"Boss," Leo’s voice broke through the agonizing reverie, holding a sealed thermal envelope stamped with the emblem of the city's foremost genetic diagnostic laboratory.

"We took the swab from Lily’s plush rabbit and compared it with your medical baseline on file with our private surgical unit.

The geneticists ran three independent PCR sequence analyses overnight."

Vincent’s hands shook—hands that had never wavered while pulling a trigger—as he tore open the envelope.

His eyes scanned down the rows of complex biological markers until they landed on the bold, black text printed at the bottom of the final page:

*PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 99.

98% - BIOLOGICAL RELATION CONFIRMED.*

The paper dropped onto the desk as Vincent gripped his temples, a guttural sound tearing from the depths of his chest.

The little girl who had stood fearlessly before his boots, defending her mother with a battered toy rabbit, was not an ordinary housekeeper's child.

She was his flesh.

She was his blood.

She was the daughter he had unknowingly mourned for four agonizing years.

"Marco knew," Vincent whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, apocalyptic rage.

"Marco set that cabin fire four years ago to drag me back to the underworld, and he kept Nora alive in the shadows to use as a hostage if I ever discovered his embezzlement."

"Leo, bring Nora to my study immediately.

It is time to end the lies."
