Chapter 8 - The Prison Betrayal

Inside the concrete visiting room of the Cook County Jail, the bond between mother and son finally shattered under the weight of prison life.
Separated by a reinforced glass partition and speaking through heavy black telephone receivers, Julian glared at his mother with pure venom.
“This is all your fault!” Julian hissed, banging his fist against the metal shelf.
“You told me Valerie was a submissive orphan who would never look at the financial books!”
“You told me to step over her while she was burning on the floor!”
Beatrice’s eyes narrowed into cold, reptilian slits as she leaned closer to the dirty glass.
“You ungrateful coward!” Beatrice snarled back into the receiver.
“I spent twenty years building an empire for you to inherit, and you couldn't even manage to secure her signature on a simple trust deed!”
“You were too busy buying diamond bracelets for your cheap little mistress in the penthouse to notice Valerie was investigating our accounts!”
Unknown to either of them, the visiting room’s recording system was actively streaming their conversation directly to the FBI’s listening post.
Julian pulled the receiver closer to his lips, his voice dropping into a desperate, treacherous whisper.
“I am taking the plea deal, Mother.”
Beatrice froze, the blood draining from her wrinkled face.
“What did you say?”
“Prosecutor Vance offered me twenty years in federal prison if I provide full sworn testimony regarding your poisoning of Thomas Vance,” Julian confessed.
“I gave them the keys to your private safe deposit box in Zurich an hour ago.”
Beatrice began to scream hysterically, slamming the heavy telephone receiver against the glass partition until the plastic cracked.
“You miserable traitor! I gave you life! I killed Thomas Vance so you could be a billionaire!”
Correctional officers immediately rushed into the booth, tackling Beatrice to the floor as she shrieked obscenities at her own son.
Julian sat back in his chair, watching his mother get dragged away into solitary confinement, realizing too late that his betrayal had saved nothing.
Special Prosecutor Marcus Vance closed his laptop in the observation room, turning to me with a satisfied nod.
