Chapter 4 - The Scars of the CEO

At eleven-forty-five, the executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Sterling Tower was consumed by frantic, panicked shouting.

Twenty board members, representing billions of dollars in international logistics assets, were arguing over plunging stock prices.

The morning news had broadcasted Julian and Beatrice’s mugshots on every financial channel across the globe.

Julian’s hand-picked deputy director, Richard Sterling, banged his gavel repeatedly on the glass table to restore order.

“We have a signed emergency resolution from Julian granting me interim power of attorney!” Richard yelled above the noise.

Before anyone could vote, the heavy double frosted-glass doors swung open with a resounding thud.

The entire boardroom dropped into an immediate, suffocating silence.

I walked into the room with steady, measured strides, wearing an impeccably tailored navy power suit with a high silk collar.

Though every step sent ripples of pain across my bandaged back, my spine remained unbent and regal.

Behind me walked Detective Marcus Vance and two federal forensic auditors carrying boxes of blue-bound legal files.

Richard Sterling froze, the wooden gavel slipping from his fingers onto the polished wood.

“Valerie… what is the meaning of this intrusion? You are on medical leave!” Richard stammered.

I took my seat at the head of the boardroom table, the chair Julian had occupied for six arrogant years.

I looked around the room, meeting the terrified eyes of every board member who had enabled my husband’s cruelty.

“I am not on leave, Richard,” I stated with absolute, terrifying clarity.

“I am here to execute the fifty-one percent majority voting rights of the Vance Estate.”

I reached up with deliberate slowness, unbuttoning the top two buttons of my silk collar.

I pulled the silk aside slightly, revealing the edge of the thick, sterile gauze covering the blistering burn marks on my collarbone.

“This is what Julian and Beatrice did to me forty-eight hours ago to steal my proxy vote,” I announced to the room.

Gasps of horror and disgust erupted from the older directors sitting near the front.

“As of this exact second, Richard, your employment is terminated, and this entire board is placed under federal receivership.”
