Chapter 11 - The Unsealed Indictment

On the morning of the grand federal trial, the steps of the Dirksen Federal Courthouse were swarmed by thousands of citizens and international media.
Signs reading JUSTICE FOR VALERIE and END CORPORATE CRUELTY waved above the sea of television cameras and journalists.
I exited my armored vehicle wearing an ivory tailored suit that commanded the attention of every lens on the street.
I did not hide behind dark sunglasses or duck beneath umbrellas held by security guards.
I walked up the wide granite steps with my head held high, representing every victim who had ever been silenced behind mansion walls.
Inside Courtroom 22, the federal prosecutors, defense attorneys, and jury members took their designated places in absolute silence.
The clerk cleared his throat and stepped forward to read the unsealed forty-eight-count grand jury indictment.
“Count one: First-degree murder of Thomas Vance,” the clerk read, his voice reverberating through the vast wood-paneled room.
“Count two: Attempted murder by means of chemical poisoning.”
“Count three: Aggravated torture and mayhem by corrosive heat.”
“Count four through forty-eight: Wire fraud, bank fraud, money laundering, corporate espionage, and federal conspiracy.”
Julian sat at the defense table, his eyes hollow, his face gaunt and grey, wearing the orange prison uniform of a condemned felon.
Beatrice sat three chairs away from him, refusing to look at her son, her hands trembling violently on the wooden table.
Arthur Pendelton rose to enter the defendants’ final pleas.
“Your Honor, after reviewing the overwhelming forensic evidence provided by the United States, my clients wish to withdraw their pleas of not guilty,” Pendelton announced in defeat.
“The defendants enter unconditional pleas of guilty to all counts.”

A collective gasp surged through the courtroom gallery before the room erupted into a frenzy of frantic sketching and note-taking.
The monster had finally laid down its weapons before the overwhelming power of indisputable truth.
