Chapter 15 - Crowned in Scars

One year later, the gentle autumn breeze rustled the crimson leaves in the quiet sanctuary of the Lake Forest Memorial Gardens.
I walked along the stone path, carrying a bouquet of fresh white lilies and yellow roses—my father’s favorites.
I knelt beside the pristine granite headstone of Thomas Vance, gently setting the flowers against the polished stone.
“We won, Dad,” I whispered into the peaceful breeze, tracing his engraved name with my fingertips.
“The foundation is thriving, your workers’ pensions are fully restored, and the people who hurt you will never see the sun again.”
Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path behind me.
I turned to see Chloe walking up the hill, holding two cups of warm spiced cider from our favorite local bakery.
“You’ve been out here for an hour, Valerie,” Chloe said with a warm, sisterly smile, handing me a steaming cup.
“The board of directors is waiting at the new trauma center for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.”
I stood up, dusting the autumn leaves from my coat, taking a deep breath of the crisp, clean Midwestern air.
For the first time in my life, there was no fear lurking in the shadows, no poison hidden in my cup, and no lies whispered in my ear.
I had lost my father, endured the flames of betrayal, and dismantled an empire of greed with my own two hands.
As we walked down the hill toward our waiting car, I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the car window.

The faint silver scars on my neck caught the golden afternoon sunlight, shining not like wounds, but like an unbreakable necklace of steel and diamond.
I smiled at my reflection, stepped into the car, and drove forward into the beautiful, unwritten future I had built for myself.
