Chapter 2 - The Decoy Vault

Julian’s high-priced corporate defense attorney, Arthur Pendelton, arrived at the central precinct within sixty minutes of the booking.
Arthur slammed his leather briefcase onto the metal interrogation table, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses with intense frustration.
“The bail hearing is set for tomorrow morning, Julian, but the judge assigned to the case is Judge Evelyn Cross,” Arthur warned grimly.
Beatrice gasped from her steel chair, her mascara smeared across her wrinkled cheeks in dark streaks.
“Cross? That woman hates old money families! She denied bail to the Sinclair heir last summer!”
“We need fifty million dollars in liquid collateral posted before sunrise,” Julian said, sweating profusely through his bespoke shirt.
“Arthur, drive to our private estate in Lake Forest immediately.”
“Open the hidden biometric floor safe beneath the master library desk,” Julian commanded with frantic urgency.
“Inside that vault is the bearer bond portfolio we seized from Valerie’s family trust six months ago.”
Arthur nodded curtly, rushing out of the precinct to execute his client’s desperate instructions.
Ninety minutes later, Arthur used the master override code to enter the locked library of the Sterling mansion.
He slid the mahogany panel aside, entered the ten-digit code, and watched the heavy titanium door swing open.
Arthur reached his gloved hand into the velvet-lined safe, pulling out the thick stack of embossed certificates.
He flipped open the top parchment, expecting to see fifty million dollars in negotiable Swiss treasury bonds.
Instead, his eyes widened in sheer horror as he read the bold print across the front page.
CERTIFICATE OF SURVEILLANCE: PROPERTY OF THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE.
Beneath the header was a glossy photograph of Julian and Beatrice sitting at that very desk, forging my father’s signature.
A single typed note from me rested at the bottom of the empty lockbox.
Did you really think a former federal prosecutor would keep fifty million dollars in a residential safe?
The real bonds were transferred to an irrevocable blind trust in Geneva forty-eight hours before your wedding anniversary.
Arthur’s phone vibrated violently on the desk, displaying Julian’s caller identification from the county jail terminal.
Arthur picked up the receiver with trembling hands, his voice cracking with dread.

“Julian… there is no money in the safe.”
“There are only federal evidentiary logs and a direct warrant for corporate racketeering.”
