Chapter 7 - The Iron Gavel

The following morning, courtroom 404 of the Cook County Criminal Courthouse was packed with reporters, cameras, and corporate spectators.

Julian and Beatrice were led into the courtroom through the secure prisoner tunnel, both wearing orange Department of Corrections jumpsuits.

Their wrists and ankles were bound in heavy iron chains that clanked ominously against the polished hardwood floor.

Julian’s arrogant posture had completely vanished; he kept his head bowed, unable to meet the flashing cameras.

Beatrice’s once-immaculate coiffure was a tangled mess of grey hair, her face pale, sunken, and aged by twenty years.

Judge Evelyn Cross took her seat at the high mahogany bench, her expression stern, unyielding, and terrifyingly cold.

Arthur Pendelton stood up immediately, adjusting his tie to deliver his passionate bail petition.

“Your Honor, my clients are distinguished pillars of the Chicago philanthropic community with zero prior convictions,” Arthur argued.

“We are prepared to post twenty-five million dollars in cash collateral and surrender all passports for home confinement.”

Judge Cross peered over her reading glasses, looking directly at the prosecution table where I sat beside Marcus Vance.

“The court recognizes the special prosecutor for the United States, Mrs. Valerie Vance,” Judge Cross announced.

I stood up slowly, the courtroom holding its collective breath as I stepped forward to the podium.

I placed the decrypted greenhouse ledger and the unredacted hospital surveillance footage onto the evidence stand.

“Your Honor, the defendants did not commit a simple domestic altercation,” I spoke with the resonant authority of a veteran litigator.

“They orchestrated the systematic poisoning and murder of Thomas Vance, laundered eighty million dollars in pension assets, and attempted to burn me alive.”

“They represent an extreme flight risk with undocumented offshore assets and a clear, present danger to society.”

Judge Cross slammed her heavy wooden gavel with the force of a thunderclap.

“Bail is denied on all counts for both defendants,” Judge Cross ruled without a moment of hesitation.

“Julian and Beatrice Sterling will remain remanded in maximum-security custody until trial.”

Julian looked up at me with sheer terror in his eyes, mouthing a desperate plea as the bailiffs dragged him toward the holding cells.

I stood motionless at the podium, watching my husband and his mother disappear into the dark tunnel of justice.
