Chapter 7 - The Ambush in Milan

The suffocating silence in the grand ballroom was heavy with the unmistakable stench of an unmasked treason.

Lorenzo Moretti backed away from the stage, his right hand instinctively dropping toward the service weapon holstered at his hip.

Before his fingers could touch the leather holster, Dante moved with blinding, lethal ferocity that defied human speed.

Dante grabbed Lorenzo’s wrist, twisting the joint with a sickening, bone-shattering snap that echoed across the four-thousand-square-foot ballroom.

Lorenzo let out a high-pitched, agonizing shriek of pain as Dante wrenched the semi-automatic sidearm from his grip, disassembling the slide and magazine in a single, fluid motion.

Dante drove a brutal, devastating knee into Lorenzo’s solar plexus, knocking the wind completely out of the corrupt commissioner and sending him crashing to his knees on the parquet floor.

“Do not reach for a weapon in the presence of Marcus Vance’s daughter, Lorenzo,” Dante said in a low, terrifying growl.

He tossed the dismantled pieces of the firearm across the floor, stepping behind the podium to plug a second encrypted drive into the master terminal.

The gigantic projection screens flickered, displaying the unredacted digital telemetry and audio files recovered from the armored convoy ambush in Milan three years ago.

The crystal-clear surround sound system filled the ballroom with an intercepted satellite telephone transmission dated forty-eight hours before Marcus Vance’s death.

Lorenzo’s distinct, smooth voice boomed from every speaker with chilling clarity: ”Dante and Marcus are traveling without heavy air support on Highway A4 outside Milan; ensure the cartel hitmen strike the rear fuel tank so neither of them survives the fire.”

Then came the reply from an Albanian cartel commander: ”The hit is confirmed, Commissioner; the eighty million dollars in Vance maritime bonds will be transferred to your Swiss account upon confirmation of both deaths.”

The entire ballroom erupted into gasps of profound horror and disgust, several of Lorenzo’s former political allies stepping back to isolate the fallen commissioner.

Elena stood on the balcony, tears streaming down her cheeks as the truth of her husband’s murder was finally laid bare before the entire world.

Marcus had not died in a random underworld firefight; he had been betrayed and executed by the very man who had stood beside him at his wedding as his best man.

Lorenzo knelt on the floor, clutching his fractured wrist, sobbing in raw, pathetic desperation as his thirty-year career and family name collapsed into dust.

“Dante… please… it wasn't my idea!” Lorenzo wept, looking up with bloodshot, terrified eyes.

“Beatrice… my mother… she told me Marcus had to be eliminated so our branch of the family could control the Atlantic ports!”

Dante looked down at his cousin with an expression of pure, unadulterated ice.

“My aunt Beatrice died in a private Swiss clinic six months ago, Lorenzo,” Dante revealed softly.

“Which means you are the only monster left to pay the bill for Marcus’s blood.”
