Chapter 3 - The Poisoned Contract

Inside the lavish master medical suite on the fourth floor of the manor, Doctor Harrison adjusted the intravenous saline drip warming Elena’s veins.

Little Maya sat on the oversized down comforter, wrapped in a plush pink fleece robe, sipping warm organic hot chocolate from a silver mug.

Elena looked around the opulent bedroom—a room adorned with original Renaissance oil paintings, hand-carved mahogany furniture, and crystal chandeliers.

For fourteen months, she had lived in a windowless eight-by-ten basement cell beneath the kitchen, sleeping on a rusted cot while Maya coughed in the damp winter chill.

The heavy oak door swung open, and Dante entered, having changed into a dry black turtleneck, dark wool trousers, and a tailored leather coat.

His dark hair was still damp, his face carved from unyielding granite as he pulled a chair beside the medical bed.

Maya immediately scrambled across the mattress, throwing her tiny arms around Dante’s muscular neck without a shred of hesitation.

Dante closed his eyes, his large hand gently supporting the back of the little girl’s head as he held her close against his heart.

“Did you make the mean lady stop laughing, Uncle Dante?” Maya asked softly into his collar.

“She will never laugh again, little star,” Dante promised, kissing her temple before looking up at Elena with profound, sorrowful eyes.

“Elena, tell me how Celeste got her claws into you,” Dante said, his voice dropping into a gentle, aching whisper.

“Marcus left you eighty million dollars in an offshore sovereign blind trust before we deployed to Milan.”

Elena wiped a tear from her cheek, pulling a worn, waterlogged silver locket from beneath her hospital gown.

Inside the locket was a photograph of Marcus Vance in his naval dress uniform, smiling brightly with his arm around a pregnant Elena.

“Two days after Marcus was killed, three men in federal tactical gear ambushed my apartment in Boston,” Elena confessed, her voice trembling.

“They handed me Marcus’s dog tags covered in blood and a forged suicide confession bearing your official syndicate seal.”

“The documents claimed Marcus had stolen twenty million dollars from the Moretti treasury and that you had executed him for treason.”

Dante gripped the armrest of the mahogany chair until the polished wood cracked beneath the brute pressure of his fingers.

“They told me that if I went to the police or accessed the Swiss trust, your assassins would execute Maya in her crib,” Elena continued, weeping softly.

“Then Celeste’s private domestic agency approached me under a charitable disguise, offering me food and shelter in exchange for manual domestic service.”

“She confiscated my passport, my social security card, and Marcus’s marriage certificate the day I walked through those gates.”

“She forced me to sign a lifetime domestic indenture contract to pay off Marcus’s alleged debt to the Moretti family.”

Dante stood up slowly, the air in the room dropping to sub-zero temperatures as the horrifying genius of the conspiracy crystallized.

Celeste hadn't just tormented Elena out of casual malice; she had orchestrated a multi-year psychological imprisonment to keep Marcus’s rightful heirs hidden from the world.

“She didn't just want a maid, Elena,” Dante said, pulling an encrypted tablet from his coat pocket.

“Celeste was waiting for Maya’s fifth birthday next month so she could execute the default succession clause and absorb Marcus’s eighty-million-dollar maritime trust into her personal holding company.”
