Chapter 2 - The Shadow of Marcus Vance

The heavy iron gates of the sixty-acre Long Island estate slammed shut with a deafening, metallic crash that vibrated through the ground.
Fifty heavily armed syndicate operators dressed in black tactical gear emerged from the shadowed birch groves, surrounding the perimeter of the terrace with assault rifles.
The music from the string quartet died instantly, the musicians abandoning their cellos to cower behind the limestone pillars.
Dante stripped off his heavy cashmere overcoat with a single fluid motion, wrapping the dry, warm wool securely around Elena’s shaking shoulders.
He scooped little Maya into his left arm, holding the child securely against his chest while supporting Elena with his right.
Celeste stood paralyzed against the marble balustrade, clutching her emerald satin gown as her breath came in frantic, shallow gasps.
“Dante, darling, this is an absurd overreaction to a clumsy domestic incident!” Celeste shrieked, her voice trembling with rising panic.
“She is just a careless maid who dropped an expensive silver tray of vintage caviar near my designer heels!”
“I merely reprimanded a servant who refused to show proper deference to the mistress of this household!”
Dante did not raise his voice; he took two slow, measured steps toward his cousin, the water from his soaked trousers leaving dark pools on the limestone.
“She is not a servant, Celeste,” Dante spoke in a low, terrifying baritone that silenced the entire ocean breeze.
“Her name is Elena Vance.”
“And the man whose ring she wears around her neck was Marcus Vance—my blood brother, my chief commander, and the man who took five hollow-point bullets to the chest to save my life in Milan three years ago.”
A suffocating, paralyzing wave of horror swept through the seventy high-society guests as the name Marcus Vance echoed across the terrace.
Every billionaire and politician in the room knew the legend of Marcus Vance—the fearless syndicate tactician whose sacrifice had allowed Dante to conquer the Eastern Seaboard.
Celeste’s face turned the color of curdled cream, her manicured fingers clawing at the stone railing for balance.
“Marcus Vance…?” Celeste stammered, her eyes darting frantically toward the shadows of the garden.
“Marcus died in Europe… his family was supposed to be relocated to a private sovereign trust in Switzerland!”
“I spent three agonizing years searching every city in North America for Marcus’s wife and newborn child,” Dante whispered, stepping within six inches of Celeste’s frozen face.
“I placed fifty-million-dollar bounties across international registries, believing they had been assassinated by our rivals.”
“And all along, you had them locked inside my own servant quarters, scrubbing your floors and eating table scraps in the dark.”
Elena leaned against Dante’s chest, shivering violently as the warmth of his coat began to penetrate the deep hypothermia.
“Dante… she told me you were the one who ordered the hit on Marcus,” Elena wept softly, clutching Maya’s cold little feet.
“She showed me authenticated bank wires with your personal signature, claiming you would slaughter my baby if I ever showed my face in Manhattan.”
Dante felt the veins along his temples throb with a murderous, blinding fury that threatened to rip his sanity apart.
“Take Elena and Maya to the master medical suite on the fourth floor immediately,” Dante ordered Doctor Harrison, who rushed forward with thermal blankets and trauma kits.
“Summon the chief of thoracic surgery and four pediatric specialists right now.”

As the medical team gently escorted Elena and Maya through the French doors, Dante turned slowly back to the terrace.
He looked at the seventy diamond-clad guests who had laughed at a widow’s humiliation, his eyes burning with an unyielding vow of absolute ruin.
