Chapter 10 - THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

The symbol belonged to a private security company that had dissolved years earlier, shortly after Daniel Russo's death.
Nico traced its remaining corporate records to a rural property outside Chicago. The land was registered to a charitable organization with no active staff, yet utility bills showed that someone had been living there.
Alessandro did not take Chiara or Mia with him.
He arranged protection for them and traveled with Nico and legal representatives who had been following the financial trail. Law enforcement was notified of the suspected fraud and the possible connection to a missing person.
The property appeared abandoned, but the front door stood unlocked.
Inside, the rooms were clean. A cup of fresh coffee sat on a table beside a stack of newspapers. Someone had left in a hurry.
On the mantelpiece was a framed photograph of two young men.
Alessandro recognized himself and Matteo.
Behind the frame, they found a letter addressed to their father. It explained that Matteo had discovered irregular payments linked to Vittorio and had tried to confront him before leaving the country.
The letter suggested Matteo had survived the incident that supposedly killed him. He had gone into hiding after learning that someone was using his name to authorize transfers.
Nico called out from the adjoining room.
A locked cabinet contained passports, medical records, and several recent photographs. One showed a middle-aged man with a scar along his left cheek, standing beside a lake.
On the back, someone had written a date from the previous month.
Alessandro felt his pulse hammer.
His brother might still be alive.
Then they heard an engine outside.
A man stepped from a dark sedan and raised both hands when the security team approached.
“My name is Henry Bellini,” he said calmly. “I've been waiting for Alessandro Vieri.”

He glanced at the photograph in Alessandro's hand.
“And if you want to know what happened to your brother, you need to stop looking at your uncle.”
