Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO GAVE UP HIS CROWN

Vittorio's downfall began with a bank statement.
Investigators found that money intended for families, employees, and legitimate business operations had been diverted through companies linked to the forged trust documents. The evidence expanded the inquiry into the old accident investigations and the disappearance of Matteo.
Vittorio denied wrongdoing, but the records contradicted his explanations. Henry's testimony, the recovered correspondence, and the original documents provided investigators with grounds to pursue the case through the courts.
Alessandro cooperated fully.
More importantly, he began dismantling the parts of his empire that had relied on fear and illegal influence. It wasn't a simple transformation. Some associates threatened to leave, and others tried to convince him that changing course would make him vulnerable.
He refused to return to the life that had kept his family trapped.
“I spent years believing power meant nobody could hurt me,” he told Nico. “All it did was teach me how many people were afraid to tell me the truth.”
He placed his legitimate businesses under independent management and established transparent oversight for the family foundation. The recovery of misappropriated funds began, and families who had been denied their promised support finally received answers.
Matteo moved closer to Chicago but did not demand immediate access to Mia. He visited when Chiara agreed, brought books instead of expensive gifts, and slowly learned the small details of his daughter's life.
Mia was cautious at first.
Then one afternoon, she took his hand and asked him to help build a birdhouse.
For the first time in years, Matteo smiled without pain.
Alessandro watched from the garden as Chiara stood beside him.
“You've changed,” she said.
“I'm trying.”
She met his gaze.
“Keep trying when nobody is watching. That's when it counts.”
He wanted to tell her that he loved her, but the words felt too important to use as a way of asking for something.
Instead, he gave her the choice he had never given Serena.
“Would you have dinner with me sometime? Somewhere you can leave whenever you want?”
Chiara smiled.
“Yes. But I choose the restaurant.”
For the first time, Alessandro Vieri looked forward to a future he hadn't arranged in advance.
Then Mia came running toward them, clutching a letter delivered by the estate's lawyer.

It was addressed to Alessandro.
And inside was a message that could change everything they had just rebuilt.
