Chapter 4 - THE FIANCÉE WITH TWO NAMES

The photograph had been taken three weeks earlier.
Alessandro stared at the supposedly dead attorney, Henry Bellini, walking beside Serena as casually as if they were planning a weekend getaway.
“Find him,” Alessandro ordered.
Nico hesitated. “If Bellini is alive, someone has spent twelve years making sure the city believes otherwise.”
“Then someone has been paying for that lie.”
While Nico worked, Alessandro called Serena into the drawing room. She arrived in an ivory dress, wearing the engagement ring he had given her two months earlier.
He had once imagined that ring would be the beginning of their future.
Now it looked like evidence.
“Did you meet Henry Bellini three weeks ago?” he asked.
Serena's fingers closed around the ring.
“I don't know that name.”
He showed her the photograph.
For one heartbeat, genuine fear crossed her face. Then she began to cry.
“He threatened me,” she whispered. “He said he'd expose things about my family unless I cooperated.”
“Cooperated with what?”
“He wanted access to the Vieri foundation. I thought he was working with your uncle, but I didn't know why. Alessandro, I swear I never intended to hurt you.”
“Then why did you tell Chiara that I'd sign documents after the wedding?”
Serena looked toward the window.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“From whom?”
She approached him and reached for his hand. He stepped away.
“Your father left debts,” she said quietly. “People died because of his decisions. Henry told me the family would be destroyed unless someone took control of the assets before the truth came out.”
“My father died in a car accident.”
Serena's tears stopped.
“He didn't tell you?”
Alessandro felt the room tilt.
She opened her purse, removed a folded copy of an old police report, and placed it on the table.
The report described evidence of tampering with his father's vehicle. The investigation had been closed after a senior official declared the damage accidental.
