Chapter 12 - THE BROTHER AT THE LAKE

Alessandro found Matteo in a small lakeside town two hours from Chicago.

His brother stood on the porch of a weathered house, thinner than he remembered, with a scar running from his cheek toward his jaw. For several seconds, neither man moved.

Then Matteo laughed bitterly.

“You took your time.”

Alessandro crossed the porch and embraced him.

All the anger, grief, and unanswered questions collided in that single moment. Matteo had missed birthdays, funerals, and nearly every important year of his brother's life. Alessandro had spent those same years believing him dead.

When they finally separated, Matteo explained what had happened.

He had discovered financial records showing that Vittorio was diverting money from legitimate family businesses. When he confronted him, a staged accident left Matteo injured and convinced that he would be killed if he returned.

He had fled with help from a trusted doctor and lived under another name. He wrote letters to the family but never sent them directly, fearing that the wrong person might find them.

“What about Mia?” Alessandro asked.

Matteo looked down.

“I knew about her. I never wanted my daughter growing up in our world.”

He explained that Marco Rossi had been his closest friend. When Matteo disappeared, Marco and Chiara had helped protect the child from people searching for her. The birth certificate had been altered to conceal the family's connection to the Vieri estate.

Mia had been raised as Marco's daughter because it was the safest option available.

Matteo's eyes filled with tears.

“I've never been the father she deserved.”

“Then start by being honest,” Alessandro replied. “And let Chiara decide what role you can have in her life.”

Before they left, Matteo handed Alessandro a sealed envelope.

It contained the original document naming the beneficiaries of their father's trust.

The first page confirmed Mia's inheritance.

The second named a second beneficiary.

Alessandro read the name and stared at his brother.

Their father had left part of the trust to someone neither of them had ever expected.
